Overvoltage protection for MV-substations

14th International Conference and Exhibition on Electricity Distribution (CIRED 1997 - Distributing Power for the Millennium), 1997
In the past, MV substations, which were fed via cable link with the overhead line, were often destroyed due to lightning flashes. These damages occurred although the unit substations are in general protected by a surge arrester at the cable/overhead line conjunction against lightning overvoltages.

Matrix converter with overvoltage protection circuit

Melecon 2010 - 2010 15th IEEE Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference, 2010
In this paper a matrix converter with a special circuit is presented. It works so that no overvoltage can be produced by an interruption of an input phase when operating with inductive load current. Also a switching off of one or more semiconductors of the inverter matrix can not produce the high voltage spikes by using the overvoltage protection ...

Overvoltage protection in wind power farms

2012 International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP), 2012
Lightning and overvoltage protection of wind power farms and wind power generators is addressed considering the different equipment and stresses. Standards are discussed and typical cases show that further investigations are necessary and new surge protective devices have to be developed and tested.

Overvoltage protection for computer serial communication

PowerCon 2000. 2000 International Conference on Power System Technology. Proceedings (Cat. No.00EX409), 2002
Micro-electronic circuits are often damaged by overvoltage. Shunting current, equalizing voltage, grounding, shielding and surge suppression are effective countermeasures for overvoltage protection, but overvoltage protection for micro-electronic circuits has some special demands different from these for electrical equipment.

Overvoltage protection, faults and voltage sags

2004 11th International Conference on Harmonics and Quality of Power (IEEE Cat. No.04EX951), 2005
Distribution transformers in rural networks have to cope with frequent lightning induced overvoltages and thus must be protected using spark gaps or surge arresters. The overvoltage protection type has an influence on the system behaviour and on the interruptions and voltage sags experienced by power system customers. In this paper, measurement results

Overvoltage transient protection network design

Proceedings of the International Conference on Electromagnetic Interference and Compatibility, 1999
Transient over-voltages caused by lightning, couples on to data communication or instrumentation signal lines and introduce serious fault alarm conditions and damage instrumentation electronics. Protection circuits to minimise the transient over-voltage are commercially available for variety of installation requirements.

Low-voltage power system surge overvoltage protection

IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, 2001
The unpredictable threat of transient overvoltages is ever increasing in today's low-voltage power supplies for every aspect of industry. To calculate the magnitude, duration and energy of such transient overvoltages is not an easy task. Some loads are becoming very sensitive to such overvoltages, thereby creating a challenge for the application ...

Converter Overvoltage Protection for DC-Grids

2018 IEEE International Telecommunications Energy Conference (INTELEC), 2018
Overvoltage protection for commercial and household installations with AC is well known and the market provides a multitude of suitable devices. However, in DC-grids, different structures, sources and loads are present, so new solutions are necessary.

Overvoltage Protection Circuits for Ultrasonically Powered Implantable Microsystems

2019 41st Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBC), 2019
This paper presents a novel overvoltage protection technique for ultrasonically powered microsystems. The proposed idea benefits from voltage-current characteristics of the piezoelectric harvesters, and limits the amplitude of the harvested signal by regulating the current consumption of the system.
