The evolutionary role and fate of the primary ovipositor in insects

Entomological Review, 2014
The development of a piercing-sawing ovipositor for introducing eggs into living plant tissues has made its owners independent of the soil characteristics and increased egg protection. This was the most important prerequisite for the appearance of wings and flight which provided the winged insects with tremendous opportunities for finding new niches ...

The Taxonomic Value of Ovipositors in Some Empoasca Species1

Annals of the Entomological Society of America, 1934
Recent researches in the biology and control of certain species of Empoasca Walsh revealed the need of ready means of distinguishing these forms. The work of DeLong (Tech. Bul. 231, U. S. D. A., 1931) on the male genitalia laid a sound basis for the classification of the males of the genus.

Further Problems in the Interpretation and Homology of the Insect Ovipositor

The Canadian Entomologist, 1964
AbstractAn attempt is made to re-evaluate the data on the origin of the ovipositor in insects and to explain its mode of development in living forms. Comparative developmental data from other groups of animals is cited to substantiate the claim that part of the insect ectodermal genitalia is appendicular rather than sternal in origin.
