The ovotestis: an underdeveloped organ of evolution

BioEssays, 2006
AbstractIn animals that have separate sexes (gonochorists), many sperm are produced to fertilise a few eggs. As the male germline undergoes more mitoses, so the accumulated mutation frequency is elevated in sperm compared with ova, and evolution is ‘male‐driven’.

Female gonad of moles, genusTalpa (Insectivora, Mammalia): Ovary or ovotestis?

Journal of Experimental Zoology, 2000
The female gonads of moles (genus Talpa) are composed of a cortex, functioning as an ovary, and a medulla, which is structurally similar to that of the testis. In the female reproductive apparatus there are masculine glandular annexes, such as a bilobate prostate, two Cowper glands, and a penis-like clitoris. All these features have recently led to the

Egg-laying hormone: Direct action on the ovotestis of Aplysia

General and Comparative Endocrinology, 1983
The bag cells are a group of neuroendocrine cells located in the abdominal ganglion of Aplysia californica. These cells induce egg laying in the animal through the release of neurohormone(s). Previous experiments established that an extract of bag cells releases eggs from isolated ovotestis fragments in a dose-dependent manner. (F. E. Dudek and S.

Nephroblastoma in an Ovotestis of a True Hermaphrodite: A Case Report

Journal of Urology, 1987
We describe a patient who presented with a painful mass in the left inguinoscrotal region, gynecomastia, perineal hypospadias with chordee and a bifid scrotum with a small gonad in the right hemiscrotum. At operation the left mass was found to be an ovotestis with hemorrhage in a corpus luteum cyst. A rudimentary uterus and fallopian tube were situated

True Hermaphroditism: First Evidence of an Ovotestis in a Cetacean Species

Journal of Comparative Pathology, 2011
An immature unilateral hermaphrodite common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) was found stranded on the southwest coast of the UK. The external phenotype was that of a female, but internally there was one ovotestis, containing both ovarian follicles and testicular tubular elements, and a contralateral ovary.

Ultrasonographic appearance of fallopian tube and ovotestis in a true hermaphrodite

European Journal of Radiology Extra, 2008
Abstract We describe the case of a 10 years old true hermaphrodite in which a scrotal mullerian derivative and ovarian and testicular tissue within the same gonad were detected preoperatively by ultrasound.

[True hermaphroditism with bilateral ovotestis].

Ginecologia y obstetricia de Mexico, 1998
A nineteen years old woman with ambiguous external genitalia was studied. This condition had been previously identified as a newborn, but her parents refused medical attention and it was reared as a girl. At 12-years, she began spontaneous mammary development, appearing pubic and axillary hair, and clitoral enlargement.

Ovotestis variability in young and adult females of the mole Talpa occidentalis (Insectivora, Mammalia)

The Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1996
The age-related evolution and ontogenic origin of the ovotestes in fertile females of the Spanish mole (Talpa occidentalis) were studied. Volume of the ovotestis and its ovarian and testicular components, size of the epididymis and testicular cords, number of ovarian follicles and testicular cords, uterus weight, and age index were analyzed ...
