Levels of Sex Steroids in Plethodontid Salamanders: A Comparative Study Within the Genus Aneides

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 11, November 2024.
Species in the salamander genus Aneides (family Plethodontidae) show interesting patterns of sexual dimorphism. Levels of androgens in males and females do not explain the variation observed between species in the degree of dimorphism and monomorphism.

In search of the glow—Three‐dimensional reconstruction of Latia neritoides with specific focus on the mantel cavity (Mollusca; Gastropoda; Hygrophila)

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, Volume 323, Issue 2, Page 97-113, June 2024.
The unique defence system of Latia neritoides (Gastropoda) involves secretion of a luminescent mucus. More knowledge on this mucus system will be helpful to understand the basic principle of this luminescent biopolymer. The mucus has incredible underwater bonding abilities, opening up new possibilities for adhesives in moist environments. In this study,

Hormone profiles of the African pygmy mouse Mus minutoides, a species with XY female sex reversal

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Zoology Part A: Ecological and Integrative Physiology, Volume 341, Issue 2, Page 130-137, March 1, 2024.
Research Highlights In Mus minutoides, XY females occur naturally and show a combination of unique behaviors, including higher aggressiveness. Hormone profiles suggest that most of these behaviors are more likely influenced by sex chromosomes rather than hormone levels.

Ovotesticular differences of sex development: male or female? Case series

open access: yesItalian Journal of Pediatrics, 2019
Background The choice of the sex of rearing in patients with ovotesticular differences of sex development (OT-DSD) is difficult. The final decision should be given by the patient himself or herself, but families’ opinion is not to neglect especially when

Effects of chitosan and emamectin benzoate on the reproductive system of Eobania vermiculata (Muller) land snails

open access: yesEgyptian Journal of Biological Pest Control, 2020
The reproductive system of snails represents essential organ that affects snail population size. Therefore, the present research was directed to evaluate the effect of two biopesticides chitosan (Ch) and emamectin benzoate (EMB) LC50 on the reproductive ...

Does stress make males? An experiment on the role of glucocorticoids in anuran sex reversal

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Zoology Part A: Ecological and Integrative Physiology, Volume 341, Issue 2, Page 172-181, March 1, 2024.
Abstract Environmentally sensitive sex determination may help organisms adapt to environmental change but also makes them vulnerable to anthropogenic stressors, with diverse consequences for population dynamics and evolution. The mechanisms translating environmental stimuli to sex are controversial: although several fish experiments supported the ...

Ovotesticular Disorder of Sex Development (Ovotestis) in Simpson–Golabi–Behmel Syndrome: Expansion of the Clinical Spectrum

open access: yes, 2018
Simpson–Golabi–Behmel syndrome type I (SGBS, OMIM312870), caused by defects of the GPC3 and GPC4 genes on chromosome Xq26, is an X-linked recessive macrosomia/multiple congenital anomaly disorder characterized by somatic overgrowth, coarse facial ...

A Case of True Hemaphroditism Presenting with Dysgerminoma [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research, 2017
The true hermaphroditism represents only 5% of all disorders of sexual differentiation, thus it is one of the rarest varieties. Diagnosis of true hermaphroditism requires the presence of both ovary and testis either as separate organs or combined to form
