Degree of Hypoxia and Physiological Differences Between Fast and Slow Ascents to Very High Altitude

open access: yesOxygen
Introduction: Rapid ascent to altitudes of over 5000 m above sea level are associated with dramatic changes in adaptive physiology. The effects of a gradual ascent on symptoms, oximetry, and heart rate are described and compared with the effects of a ...

Reflections on the Utility of the Retina as a Biomarker for Alzheimer's Disease: A Literature Review. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
As a part of the central nervous system, the retina may reflect both physiologic processes and abnormalities related to diseases of the brain. Indeed, a concerted effort has been put forth to understand how Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology may manifest

Sympatho‐Excitation in Pulmonary Hypertension: The Potential Role of Pulmonary Arterial Baroreceptors: An Acute Physiologic Intervention Study

open access: yesRespirology, EarlyView.
Pulmonary arterial baroreceptors reflexively stimulate sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) in response to elevated pulmonary artery pressure and distension. In pulmonary hypertension patients, changes in muscle SNA were proportional to changes in pulmonary haemodynamics following nebulised iloprost.

Monte Carlo Analysis of Optical Interactions in Reflectance and Transmittance Finger Photoplethysmography [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Photoplethysmography (PPG) is a non-invasive photometric technique that measures the volume changes in arterial blood. Recent studies have reported limitations in developing and optimising PPG-based sensing technologies due to unavailability of the ...

Determinants of Improved Dyspnea and Exercise Tolerance With Nasal High‐Flow O2 Therapy in Fibrotic Interstitial Lung Disease: A Pilot Physiological Study

open access: yesRespirology, EarlyView.
We tested the respective effect of high‐flow and supplemental O2 from nasal high‐flow O2 therapy (NHFO2) on dyspnea and exercise tolerance in fibrotic interstitial lung disease. Supplemental O2 and NHFO2 (but not high‐flow) provided improvements in these outcomes at “iso‐O2 saturation” due to reduced ventilatory requirements.

Agreement between arterial and non-arterialised fingertip capillary blood gas and acid-base values

open access: yesEuropean Clinical Respiratory Journal, 2019
Background: Arterial puncture is considered the gold standard for obtaining blood gas and acid-base values and facilitates the assessment of acutely and critically ill patients, as well as control of patients in long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT ...

The Various Oximetric Techniques Used for the Evaluation of Blood Oxygenation

open access: yesSensors, 2020
Adequate oxygen delivery to a tissue depends on sufficient oxygen content in arterial blood and blood flow to the tissue. Oximetry is a technique for the assessment of blood oxygenation by measurements of light transmission through the blood, which is ...
