Physical access for residue-mineral interactions controls organic carbon retention in an Oxisol soil

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
Oxisol soils are widely distributed in the humid tropical and subtropical regions and are generally characterized with high contents of metal oxides.

Five decades of hand‐feel soil texture estimation: Accuracy, challenges, and improvements

open access: yesSoil Science Society of America Journal, Volume 90, Issue 3, May/June 2026.
Abstract Soil texture refers to the proportion of fine soil particles with diameters less than 2 mm, classified into particle size categories that define the soil texture class. Hand‐feel estimation in the field is widely used by soil scientists and technicians during pedological surveys to characterize soil horizons.

Pedology and its relationship to cropping decisions in Kamuli District, Uganda

open access: yesSoil Science Society of America Journal, Volume 90, Issue 3, May/June 2026.
Abstract Kamuli District offers an opportunity to understand pedology and cropping decisions in an area that has been underdocumented. Broad, flat summits and narrow convex shoulders are composed of residuum formed from Precambrian granite. Valleys mirror the summits, that is, broad flats composed of alluvium that are rimmed by narrow concave toeslopes.

Biological P cycling is influenced by the form of P fertilizer in an Oxisol

open access: yesBiology and Fertility of Soils, 2017
Phosphate rock (PR) is an alternative fertilizer to increase the P content of P-deficient weathered soils. We evaluated the effects of fertilizer form on indicators of biological cycling of P using an on-farm trial on a Rhodic Kandiudox in western Kenya.

Stemflow Dynamics in the Jamari National Forest (Brazilian Amazon): I. The Role of Tree Structure

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 58, Issue 3, May 2026.
A portion of rainfall that contacts tree canopies is drained down tree stems as stemflow. Stemflow is an underexamined component of rainfall partitioning in tropical forests. To investigate how tree canopy structural attributes influence stemflow in the Brazilian Amazon, we measured stemflow, rainfall, and dendrometric parameters of 56 trees in the ...

Implications of agricultural management on the epigeic fauna and soil physical properties of a clayey Oxisol

open access: yesRevista Ceres, 2018
The intensive use of land based on non-conservation practices contributes to the reduction of soil quality. In this sense, the objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of farming systems on clayey Oxisol in the northwest of the state of Rio ...

The Potential Benefits and Limitations of Corn Cob and Sewage Sludge Biochars in an Infertile Oxisol

open access: yes, 2016
The thermal conversion of sewage sludge to biochar offers a promising alternative use for a hazardous waste material with potential benefits to agricultural productivity and soil quality. Three short-term greenhouse experiments were conducted to evaluate

Comparison of grain yields and N2O emissions on Oxisol and Vertisol soils in response to fertiliser N applied as urea or urea coated with the nitrification inhibitor 3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate

open access: yes, 2016
The potential for elevated nitrous oxide (N2O) losses is high in subtropical cereal cropping systems in north-east Australia, where the fertiliser nitrogen (N) input is one single application at or before planting.

Sorption and desorption of diuron in Oxisol under biochar application

open access: yes, 2016
Bragantia, Campinas, v. 75, n. 4, p.487-496, 2016 AbstrAct: The objective of this study was to verify the kinetics of sorption and desorption of diuron in an Oxisol under application of biochar.
