Optimizing photoactivation of PA‐mCherry for optical pooled CRISPR screens

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Photoactivatable PA‐mCherry finds widespread use to optically tag individual cells. However, confocal 405 nm UV laser‐scanning (normal scan) is much less efficient than widefield UV illumination, limiting the use of PA‐mCherry on confocal instruments. We remedy this limitation by reporting that rapid and repeated confocal scanning with a low‐intensity,

Acute caffeine treatment protects the developing retina from ischemia‐induced cell death

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Caffeine reduces cell death in the developing retina under ischemia (OGD). This effect does not involve BDNF upregulation or antioxidant pathways (NRF2/VEGF). Neuroprotection occurs mainly through adenosine A2A receptor antagonism, decreasing glutamate release and excitotoxicity, highlighting caffeine's potential as an acute neuroprotective agent in ...

Template-free ultraspray pyrolysis synthesis of N- and Fe-doped carbon microspheres for oxygen reduction electrocatalysis

open access: yes, 2015
The overall energy efficiency in fuel cells is deeply affected by the sluggish kinetics of the two electrodes processes. Between them the most kinetically hindered is the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode.

Sudden anaerobization in Amphibacillus xylanus increases intracellular labile ferrous iron and inhibits cell growth

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Abruptly changing from aerobic to anaerobic conditions (sudden anaerobization) induced growth inhibition and a significant increase in intracellular labile ferrous iron in the aerotolerant anaerobe Amphibacillus xylanus. We found that free flavins mediate efficient electron transfer from NADH to ferric iron under anaerobic conditions, suggesting that ...

Carbothermal-Reduction-Assisted Phosphidation of Cobalt Affords Mesoporous Nitrogen-Doped Carbon-Embedded CoP Nanoelectrocatalysts for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

open access: yes, 2019
We demonstrate a new facile single-step synthesis of mesoporous nitrogen-doped carbon-embedded cobalt phosphide (NC-CoP) nanoparticles using a single-source precursor of the cobalt(II) bis(terpyridine)-based complex ([Co(pyterpy)2](PF6)2) by ...

One size does not fit all: An in vitro evaluation of the effects of bezafibrate and medroxyprogesterone acetate on human SH‐SY5Y and U‐87 MG cancer cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Drugs previously repurposed to target blood cancers reduced neuroblastoma and glioblastoma cell growth and viability. However, their levels of anticancer activity were different and their clinical application may be problematic due to side effects at effective doses.

Lipopolysaccharide uptake is augmented in lipopolysaccharide‐tolerant mouse macrophage‐like cells via increased CD14 expression

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In normal (nontolerant) cells, CD14 is crucial for both LPS uptake and LPS signaling. In LPS‐tolerant cells, in which LPS‐induced TNF‐α and IFN‐β production is suppressed, there is a dramatic increase in surface CD14 expression. The overexpressed CD14 in LPS‐tolerant cells is responsible for the enhanced LPS uptake without inducing pro‐inflammatory ...

Investigation of gas diffusion electrodes for electrochemical oxygen reduction

open access: yes, 2010
In order to analyze in detail the kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline solution (25 wt% KOH and 10 N NaOH) of PTFE-bonded Gas Diffusion silver Electrodes (GDEs) electrochemical impedance measurements and current-voltage curves have

Electrochemical-reduction-assisted assembly of ternary Ag nanoparticles/polyoxometalate/graphene nanohybrids and their activity in the electrocatalysis of oxygen reduction

open access: yes, 2015
The green, facile, electrochemical-reduction-assisted assembly of ternary Ag nanoparticles (NPs)@polyoxometalate (POM)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is reported. The POM served as an electrocatalyst and bridging molecule.

Cyclic azapeptide CD36 ligand attenuates cardiac injury and reduces long‐chain fatty acid accumulation after myocardial ischemia–reperfusion in mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In a murine model of myocardial ischemia and reperfusion (MI/R), the CD36 azapeptide ligand MPE‐298 reduces cardiac injury and transiently lowers left ventricular long‐chain fatty acids (LCFAs) accumulation 3 h after reperfusion, accompanied by a decrease of oxidative stress and inflammation‐associated genes' expression in the heart and adipose tissue.
