Fibronectin coating of oxygenator membranes enhances endothelial cell attachment

open access: yesBioMedical Engineering OnLine, 2013
BackgroundExtracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) can replace the lungs’ gas exchange capacity in refractory lung failure. However, its limited hemocompatibility, the activation of the coagulation and complement system as well as plasma leakage and ...

Interstitial N‐Strengthened Copper‐Based Bioactive Conductive Dressings Combined with Electromagnetic Fields for Enhanced Wound Healing

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study developed a nitrogen‐strengthened copper‐iron‐zinc (N‐CuFeZn) alloy bioactive dressing integrated with electromagnetic stimulation. The coaxial dressing, made from 0.04 mm filaments with 1120 MPa tensile strength, showed that electromagnetic activation enhanced therapeutic outcomes by increasing VEGF expression, promoting angiogenesis (2.1 ...

Tumor Microenvironment‐responsive Nanocatalyst for Targeted Chemodynamic Cancer Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
An Tumor microenvironment‐responsive nanocatalyst system composed of PLGA‐encapsulated Ca–Fe peroxide and polyarginine enables sustainable Fenton reaction in tumors. Low levels of H2O2 (50–100 µm) initiate the nanoparticle degradation, while polyarginine‐derived nitric oxide accelerates Fe3+ reduction, leading to self‐amplifying •OH generation for ...

Air Transmission Comparison of the Affinity Fusion Oxygenator with an Integrated Arterial Filter to the Affinity NT Oxygenator with a Separate Arterial Filter.

open access: yesThe journal of extra-corporeal technology, 2014
Arterial filters used in the extracorporeal circuit (ECC) have been shown to minimize cerebral injury by capturing particulate matter and microbubbles.

Antitumoral Efficacy of AuNRs‐Laden ECFCs In Vitro and In Vivo: Decoding the Heat and Rays Combo Treatment in Breast Cancer and Melanoma Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Endothelial Colony Forming Cells (ECFCs) acted as cellular cyborgs, stealthily transporting gold nanorods (AuNRs) into tumors to enable targeted near‐infrared (NIR) hyperthermia combined with radiotherapy. This approach triggers ferroptosis in melanoma and inhibits autophagy in breast cancer, revealing a tumor‐specific response to nanomaterial‐assisted

Changes in sevoflurane plasma concentration with delivery through the oxygenator during on-pump cardiac surgery.

open access: yesBritish Journal of Anaesthesia, 2013
BACKGROUND It is unclear what factors affect the uptake of sevoflurane administered through the membrane oxygenator during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and whether this can be monitored via the oxygenator exhaust gas.

3D Bioprinted Renal Constructs Using Kidney‐Specific ECM Bioink System on Kidney Regeneration

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A kidney‐specific bioink derived from decellularized porcine kidney tissue supports the encapsulation, viability, and maturation of human primary kidney cells within 3D bioprinted constructs. In vivo, it also promotes the recruitment of host renal progenitor cells, collectively enhancing structural and functional regeneration of renal tissue.

Extracorporeal support for patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Extracorporeal membrane oxygen (ECMO) has been used for many years in patients with life-threatening hypoxaemia and/or hypercarbia. While early trials demonstrated that it was associated with poor outcomes and extensive haemorrhage, the technique has ...
