Structural insights into lacto‐N‐biose I recognition by a family 32 carbohydrate‐binding module from Bifidobacterium bifidum

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bifidobacterium bifidum establishes symbiosis with infants by metabolizing lacto‐N‐biose I (LNB) from human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs). The extracellular multidomain enzyme LnbB drives this process, releasing LNB via its catalytic glycoside hydrolase family 20 (GH20) lacto‐N‐biosidase domain.

Effect of γ-Irradiation on Structure and Electrophysical Properties of S-Doped ZnO Films

open access: yesEast European Journal of Physics
The produced ZnO films were characterized with the crystallographic orientation (001) and lattice parameters a = b = 0.3265 nm and c = 0.5212 nm. ZnO1—хSх nano-crystallites on the surface of the film had characteristic sizes ranging from 50 nm to 200 nm.

Peptide‐based ligand antagonists block a Vibrio cholerae adhesin

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The structure of a peptide‐binding domain of the Vibrio cholerae adhesin FrhA was solved by X‐ray crystallography, revealing how the inhibitory peptide AGYTD binds tightly at its Ca2+‐coordinated pocket. Structure‐guided design incorporating D‐amino acids enhanced binding affinity, providing a foundation for developing anti‐adhesion therapeutics ...

Estimation of P‐S‐N curves in very‐high‐cycle fatigue: Statistical procedure based on a general crack growth rate model

open access: yesFatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures, 2017
AbstractExtensive experimental investigations show that internal defects play a key role in the very‐high‐cycle fatigue (VHCF) response of metallic materials and that crack growth from internal defects can take place even if the stress intensity factor associated to the initial defect is below the threshold for crack growth.

Disordered but rhythmic—the role of intrinsic protein disorder in eukaryotic circadian timing

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Unstructured domains known as intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) are present in nearly every part of the eukaryotic core circadian oscillator. IDRs enable many diverse inter‐ and intramolecular interactions that support clock function. IDR conformations are highly tunable by post‐translational modifications and environmental conditions, which ...

Self-consistent field theoretic simulations of amphiphilic triblock copolymer solutions: Polymer concentration and chain length effects

open access: yesCondensed Matter Physics, 2014
Using the self-consistent field lattice model, polymer concentration φP and chain length N (keeping the length ratio of hydrophobic to hydrophilic blocks constant) the effects on temperature-dependent behavior of micelles are studied, in amphiphilic ...

Efficacy and onset of action of mometasone furoate/formoterol and fluticasone propionate/salmeterol combination treatment in subjects with persistent asthma

open access: yesAllergy, Asthma & Clinical Immunology, 2011
Background Mometasone furoate/formoterol (MF/F) is a novel combination therapy for treatment of persistent asthma. This noninferiority trial compared the effects of MF/F and fluticasone propionate/salmeterol (FP/S) combination therapies on pulmonary ...

Substrate specificity of Burkholderia pseudomallei multidrug transporters is influenced by the hydrophilic patch in the substrate‐binding pocket

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Multidrug transporters BpeB and BpeF from the Gram‐negative pathogen Burkholderia pseudomallei have a hydrophilic patch in their substrate‐binding pocket. Drug susceptibility tests and growth curve analyses using an Escherichia coli recombinant expression system revealed that the hydrophilic patches of BpeB and BpeF are involved in the substrate ...

Particle Swarm Optimization-Based Unconstrained Polygonal Fitting of 2D Shapes

open access: yesAlgorithms
In this paper, we present a general version of polygonal fitting problem called Unconstrained Polygonal Fitting (UPF). Our goal is to represent a given 2D shape S with an N-vertex polygonal curve P with a known number of vertices, so that the ...
