Bamboo Medical Application: A State‐of‐the‐Art Review

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This review presents a structured classification of bamboo's current use in healthcare. It organizes applications into medical textiles and medical devices, with further divisions based on function and level of invasiveness. It also examines material utilization based on bamboo's structural role, highlighting how it supports both protective and ...

MortalitySmooth: An R Package for Smoothing Poisson Counts with P-Splines

open access: yesJournal of Statistical Software, 2012
The MortalitySmooth package provides a framework for smoothing count data in both one- and two-dimensional settings. Although general in its purposes, the package is specifically tailored to demographers, actuaries, epidemiologists, and geneticists who ...

Semiparametric models and P-splines [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
P-splines were introduced by Eilers and Marx (1996). We consider semiparametric models where the smooth part of the model can be described by P-splines. A mixed model representation is also considered. We set a simple strategy for the choice of P-spline parameters, ndx, bdeg and pord, and discuss the use of various criteria for smoothing parameter ...

Locally adaptive Bayesian P-splines with a Normal-Exponential-Gamma prior [PDF]

open access: yesComputational Statistics & Data Analysis, 2009
The necessity to replace smoothing approaches with a global amount of smoothing arises in a variety of situations such as effects with highly varying curvature or effects with discontinuities. We present an implementation of locally adaptive spline smoothing using a class of heavy-tailed shrinkage priors. These priors utilize scale mixtures of normals

Prior Expectations Bias Confidence Judgments Through Parietal Alpha‐Band Modulation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Humans possess the metacognitive ability to estimate the likely accuracy of their own decisions through confidence judgments. Yet, whether prior information shapes confidence and the neural mechanisms mediating such influence, remain to be determined.

Quantifying spatial disparities in neonatal mortality using a structured additive regression model. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2010
BACKGROUND: Neonatal mortality contributes a large proportion towards early childhood mortality in developing countries, with considerable geographical variation at small areas within countries.

Phase Diagrams and Piezoelectric Properties of Wurtzite Al1−x−yScxGdyN Heterostructural Alloys

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates ferroelectricity and piezoelectric properties improvement of quaternary wurtzite Al1−x−yScxGdyN${\rm Al}_{1-x-y}{\rm Sc}_x{\rm Gd}_y{\rm N}$ films, guided by density functional theory calculations. Wurtzite Al1−x−yScxGdyN${\rm Al}_{1-x-y}{\rm Sc}_x{\rm Gd}_y{\rm N}$ films have a high optical bandgap, enhanced piezoelectric ...

Physics‐Constrained Constitutive Learning of Rate‐Limiting Timescales for Efficient Hydrogen‐Based Direct Reduction for Green Steel Making

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A conversion‐resolved constitutive framework is developed for the hydrogen‐based direct reduction of iron oxide pellets. Effective reaction and transport timescales are inferred directly from measured trajectories and mapped against operating conditions, pellet architecture, and composition. The analysis reveals how late‐stage transport control emerges
