Challenges in breeding and selecting Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa × P. incarnata hybrids

open access: yesTechnology in Horticulture, 2023
Passiflora is comprised of many species, with P. edulis being the prominent commercial species. Another species that grows in more temperate regions is P. incarnata. Breeding to create interspecific hybrids with these two species has been done before but without longstanding success. Controlled crosses of P. edulis f. flavicarpa × P.

Extreme Silk Toughness in Caerostris Spiders Is Limited to Adult Females

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
We ask whether species with exceptionally tough silk, like Caerostris bark spiders, show different developmental patterns in silk toughness between ontogenetic stages and sexes. We found that only large females produce exceptionally tough silk with higher initial stiffness, while juvenile females as well as adult and juvenile males produce inferior ...

Regional perspectives: Substance use related problems in Ethiopia

open access: yesAddiction, EarlyView.
Abstract Ethiopia, with a population exceeding 130 million, presents a complex landscape for understanding substance use disorders. The country's diverse cultural heritage, varying regional practices, and evolving socioeconomic conditions create unique factors of substance use that differ markedly from global trends.

A limpet's eye view of post‐glacial isostasy: fixed biological indicators provide new sea‐level index points for the Mid‐Holocene relative highstand in eastern Northern Ireland

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
Bioerosional scars made by limpets (Patella) on a cliff in Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland, indicate a Mid‐Holocene RSL of +7.8±0.55 m relative to local mid‐tide level today. This is higher than previous empirical data for the region and extrapolated levels from raised shorelines in Scotland but consistent with some recent GIA models.

Mammal defaunation leads to biotic homogenization of plant communities in tropical rainforests. [PDF]

open access: yesEcology
Abstract Biotic homogenization is the process in which species communities become increasingly similar across different regions over time. This phenomenon has substantial ecological, evolutionary, and economic implications, primarily driven by human activities such as habitat destruction, invasive species introduction, and climate change.

Antisense reduction in NADP‐ME in the C4 species Flaveria bidentis alters stomatal sensitivity to intercellular [CO2]

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Summary Stomata have the crucial role of balancing the uptake of CO2 for photosynthesis and water loss via transpiration by adjusting their aperture. In C3 plants, coordination between photosynthesis and stomatal conductance can be disrupted by mutations in Calvin–Benson–Bassham (CBB) cycle expression, but it is not clear whether the disruption of the ...
