P. aeruginosa Biofilms in CF Infection [PDF]

open access: yesClinical Reviews in Allergy and Immunology, 2008
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen of immunocompromised hosts. In cystic fibrosis (CF), P. aeruginosa causes acute and chronic lung infections that result in significant morbidity and mortality. P. aeruginosa possesses several traits that contribute to its ability to colonize and persist in acute and chronic infections.

Nanoscale effects of antibiotics on P. aeruginosa

Nanomedicine: Nanotechnology, Biology and Medicine, 2012
Studying living bacteria at the nanoscale in their native liquid environment opens an unexplored landscape. We focus on Pseudomonas aeruginosa and demonstrate how the cell wall is biophysically affected at the nanoscale by two reference antibiotics (ticarcillin and tobramycin).

P. aeruginosa quorum-sensing systems and virulence

Current Opinion in Microbiology, 2003
Quorum sensing is an important mechanism for the regulation of genes in many Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. In the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the absence of one or more components of the quorum-sensing system results in a significant reduction in virulence.

P. aeruginosa biofilm activates the NLRP3 inflammasomes in vitro

Microbial Pathogenesis, 2022
The ability of P.aeruginosa to form biofilms renders common treatments inefficient, thereby promoting chronic infection. Inflammasomes activate caspase-1, which is important for the maturation of IL-1β and IL-18 and evoke an inflammatory response. We aimed to investigate the activation of inflammasomes induced by P.aeruginosa biofilm.

Acquired Resistance to P. aeruginosa

1993
Infections due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa are difficult to acquire without a basic underlying condition such as immunosuppression or cystic fibrosis (CF). Innate resistance to this organism is high. Community-acquired infection is rare, limited mostly to non-life-threatening conditions such as folliculitis from a hot tub or whirlpool and otitis externa.

Oral pseudomonas aeruginosa immunization enhances survival in mice subsequently burned and infected with P. aeruginosa

International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents, 1992
Mice fed 0 serotype-specific strains of P. aeruginosa for two weeks, had increased titers of IgM but not IgG antibodies to the strains fed. Immunized mice, burned and infected with P. aeruginosa, showed significant 0 serotype-specific enhanced survival.
