Entrainment of randomly coupled oscillator networks by a pacemaker [PDF]
Entrainment by a pacemaker, representing an element with a higher frequency, is numerically investigated for several classes of random networks which consist of identical phase oscillators. We find that the entrainment frequency window of a network decreases exponentially with its depth, defined as the mean forward distance of the elements from the ...

Possible evidence from the flaring activity of Sgr A* for a star at a distance of ~3.3 Schwarzscild radii from the blackhole [PDF]
The frequent flaring events in the X-ray and the NIR radiation of Sgr A* seem not to be periodic in time. However, statistical regularities, here termed "modulations by a pacemaker", are found in the recorded arrival times of both types of events. The characteristic time of the X-ray pacemaker is 149 min and that of the NIR pacemaker is 40 min.

Technique for implanting intramuscular electrodes in the diaphragm by videolaparoscopy in pigs [PDF]
PURPOSE: To describe a novel approach for implanting intramuscular electrodes in the diaphragm through videolaparoscopy. METHODS: We used twelve pigs for this videolaparoscopic technique, which permits at the same time to explore the diaphragm, to ...

Self-organized stable pacemakers near the onset of birhythmicity [PDF]
General amplitude equations for reaction-diffusion systems near to the soft onset of birhythmicity described by a supercritical pitchfork-Hopf bifurcation are derived. Using these equations and applying singular perturbation theory, we show that stable autonomous pacemakers represent a generic kind of spatiotemporal patterns in such systems.

Equilivest: A Robotic Vest to aid in Post-Stroke Dynamic Balance Rehabilitation [PDF]
Stroke is a medical condition that can affect motor function, particularly dynamic balance. Biofeedback can aid in rehabilitation procedures which help patients to regain lost motor activity and recover functionality. In this work, we are presenting a robotic smart-vest device that can analyze Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) data and assist in ...

The relation between cardiac 123I-mIBG scintigraphy and functional response 1 year after CRT implantation [PDF]
Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is a disease-modifying therapy in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). Current guidelines ascribe CRT eligibility on three parameters only: left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), QRS duration, and New ...

Bioresorbable and Wireless Rechargeable Implanted Na‐ion Battery for Temporary Medical Devices
An all‐solid‐state bioresorbable Na‐ion battery is developed, composed entirely of bio‐eliminable materials. In vivo and ex vivo tests confirmed harmless disintegration of this implanted battery. Lifetime of the implanted battery can be precisely controlled by adjusting the dissolvable encapsulation layer's thickness.

In Synch but Not in Step: Circadian Clock Circuits Regulating Plasticity in Daily Rhythms [PDF]
The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) is a network of neural oscillators that program daily rhythms in mammalian behavior and physiology. Over the last decade much has been learned about how SCN clock neurons coordinate together in time and space to form a ...
