Multi-decadal variations of ENSO, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and tropical cyclones in the western North Pacific

Progress in Oceanography, 2012
Abstract In this paper, the multi-decadal variations of the Multivariate ENSO Index (MEI) and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) index were studied to determine their influence on tropical cyclones (TCs) using the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) method and Hilbert spectral analysis.

Decadal Changes in Multiscale Water Vapor Transport and Atmospheric River Associated with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and the North Pacific Gyre Oscillation

Journal of Hydrometeorology, 2015
Abstract This study investigates the features of atmospheric circulation and moisture transport associated with two modes of decadal variability in the North Pacific: the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) and the North Pacific Gyre Oscillation (NPGO), with emphasis on the multiscale water vapor transport and atmospheric river (AR) over ...

Distinct impact of the Pacific multi‐decadal oscillation on precipitation in Northeast China during April in different Pacific multi‐decadal oscillation phases

International Journal of Climatology, 2019
AbstractThe impact of the Pacific multi‐decadal oscillation (PMO) on precipitation in April during the sowing season in Northeast China (NEC) was analysed. According to the results, there was a significant inter‐decadal change in the relationship between the PMO in December of the previous year and the precipitation in NEC in April of the following ...

Analysis of the forcings of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation in CCSM4

2014
The Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), a variation of sea surface temperatures in the North Pacific Ocean, is analyzed using modeled output from the Community Climate System Model (CCSM) 4.0. The proposed forcings which cause this variation are fluctuations in the El Nino Southern Oscillation cycle, the Hadley cell circulation, the sea level pressure ...

Tropical Forcing of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation Tied to Central Pacific ENSO

Journal of Climate
Abstract The Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) is the leading empirical mode of sea surface temperature (SST) variability in the North Pacific, exhibiting a horseshoe-shaped pattern. The PDO can be driven by tropical Pacific El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), associated with its eastern Pacific (EP) type as traditionally thought.

A mechanism for the multi-decadal climate oscillation in the North Pacific

Theoretical and Applied Climatology, 2007
Analysis of both instrumental and proxy climate records indicates the existence of multi-decadal climate variations (about 40–70 years) over the northern hemisphere. A simple model for the midlatitude ocean-atmosphere coupled system is presented to discuss a possible mechanism for this multi-decadal variation.

Dynamical Components of Observational Pacific Decadal Oscillation

The Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) is a robust pattern of sea surface temperature (SST) variability of the global ocean and the Pacific Ocean. It emerges as a leading pattern in several different kinds of analysis: e.g., as the leading principal component (PC) of North Pacific SST, as the leading PC of 6-yr or longer low-pass filtered pan-Pacific ...
