On the observed relationship between the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and the Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation

open access: yesJournal of Oceanography, 2011
We studied the relationship between the dominant patterns of sea surface temperature (SST) variability in the North Pacific and the North Atlantic. The patterns are known as the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and the Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation (AMO). In the analysis we used two different observational data sets for SST.

The Pacific decadal oscillation and changes in anchovy populations in the Northwest Pacific

Journal of Asian Earth Sciences, 2015
The Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) has been identified as an important driver for fluctuation of fish populations on the eastern Pacific Ocean. However, the relationship between changes in fish population and climate oscillations on a decadal time scale in the Northwest Pacific is still unclear due to the lack of reliable long-term time series data.

Decadal Relationship between the Stratospheric Arctic Vortex and Pacific Decadal Oscillation

open access: yesJournal of Climate, 2018
Abstract Using reanalysis datasets and numerical simulations, the relationship between the stratospheric Arctic vortex (SAV) and the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) on decadal time scales was investigated. A significant in-phase relationship between the PDO and SAV on decadal time scales during 1950–2014 is found, that is, the North ...

The Pacific Decadal Oscillation

Journal of Oceanography, 2002
The Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) has been described by some as a long-lived El Nino-like pattern of Pacific climate variability, and by others as a blend of two sometimes independent modes having distinct spatial and temporal characteristics of North Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) variability.

The Forcing of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation*

Journal of Climate, 2005
Abstract The Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO), defined as the leading empirical orthogonal function of North Pacific sea surface temperature anomalies, is a widely used index for decadal variability. It is shown that the PDO can be recovered from a reconstruction of North Pacific sea surface temperature anomalies based on a first-order ...

Stratospheric wave activity and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation

Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics, 2010
Using the monthly mean NCEP/NCAR reanalysis and NOAA Extended Reconstructed sea surface temperature (SST) datasets, strong correlations between the SST anomalies in the North Pacific and calculated three-dimensional Eliassen–Palm vertical fluxes are indicated in December 1958–1976 and 1992–2006.

Possible solar modulation of pacific decadal oscillation

Solar System Research, 2017
The Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) is an El Nino-like pattern of Pacific climate variability, oscillating between its warm and cool phase about every 20–30 years as defined by oceanic temperature anomalies in the northeast and tropical Pacific Ocean.
