Constraints on Climate Change Stabilization Based on Observations of Earth's Energy Imbalance

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 10, 28 May 2026.
Abstract The Earth's energy imbalance (EEI) at the top of the atmosphere is a key indicator of climate change that determines the Earth's heating rate. Here, we use a global reconstruction of surface temperature and EEI measurements to constrain global projections of the Earth heating rate until the end of the century.

Revisiting ENSO Regime Shift Around 2000: A Perspective From Recharge Oscillator‐Based Linear Inverse Model

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 10, 28 May 2026.
Abstract Classic Recharge Oscillator (RO) studies typically rely on spatially averaged indices, which capture the temporal characteristics of ENSO mode but provide limited information on its spatial structure. To address this limitation, a Recharge Oscillator‐based Linear Inverse Model (RO–LIM) was developed by embedding the recharge–discharge physics ...

Representation of Stratocumulus and Shallow Cumulus Cloud Fraction Near the Southeast Pacific Ocean ITCZ in ERA5 and MERRA‐2 Reanalyses

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 10, 28 May 2026.
Abstract Model precipitation biases in the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) are often tied to the underestimation of stratocumulus (Sc) and shallow cumulus (Cu) clouds. We design a method to distinguish between Sc and Cu cloud regimes under subsidence on daily timescales based on cloud top pressure and vertical velocity to investigate the spatial ...

Weather Regimes Preclude the Observation of a Southern Annular Mode Signal in Two Coastal East Antarctic Ice Cores

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 10, 28 May 2026.
Abstract The Southern Annular Mode (SAM) represents the dominant pattern of climate variability in the extratropical Southern Hemisphere. However, its signature in coastal East Antarctic ice core records is unclear. A daily synoptic typing data set for the southern Indian Ocean constructed using self‐organizing maps on 500 hPa daily geopotential height

Interannual Variations of Precipitation Events at Dome Fuji Station, Antarctica

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 10, 28 May 2026.
Abstract Precipitation is key to the water budget of inland Antarctica, with extreme precipitation events strongly influencing snowfall and surface climatology. To investigate the contribution and trends of such events at Dome Fuji station (DF) in inland Antarctica, this study analyzed precipitation variability using the ERA5 product validated against ...
