Multi-decadal modulations in the Aleutian-Icelandic Low seesaw and the axial symmetry of the Arctic Oscillation signature, as revealed in the 20th century reanalysis [PDF]

open access: yesTellus: Series A, Dynamic Meteorology and Oceanography, 2014
Seesaw relationship in intensity between the surface Aleutian and Icelandic Lows (AIS) is a manifestation of atmospheric teleconnection that bridges the interannual variability over the Pacific and Atlantic in particular winter months.

Decadal variability in seawater pH in the West Pacific: Evidence from coral delta B-11 records

open access: yes, 2015
Long-term seawater pH records are essential for evaluating the rates of ocean acidification (OA) driven by anthropogenic emissions. Widespread, natural decadal variability in seawater pH superimposes on the long-term anthropogenic variations, likely ...

A Panel of Circulating Exosomal sncRNAs Associated With Lung Cancer Risk up to 10 Years in Advance

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Lung cancer is often diagnosed too late, and current screening overlooks many people at risk. In a long‐term study of smokers, a panel of small non‐coding RNAs carried in blood exosomes signals elevated lung cancer risk up to ten years before diagnosis, pointing toward a blood‐based tool for earlier risk detection.

Predictability of tropical Pacific decadal variability is dominated by oceanic Rossby waves

open access: yesnpj Climate and Atmospheric Science
Despite its pronounced global impacts, tropical Pacific decadal variability (TPDV) is poorly predicted by current climate models due to model deficiencies and a limited understanding of its underlying mechanisms.

Evidencing decadal and interdecadal hydroclimatic variability over the Central Andes

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters, 2016
In this study we identified a significant low frequency variability (8 to 20 years) that characterizes the hydroclimatology over the Central Andes. Decadal–interdecadal variability is related to the central-western Pacific Ocean ( R ^2  = 0.50) and the ...

Decadal climate variability in Australia during the twentieth century

open access: yes, 1999
High quality rainfall and surface temperature records for Australia during the period 1910-1993 are examined to quantify the relative importance of decadal variability and to ascertain if there is any relationship with sea-surface temperature (SST ...

Unveiling the Taxonomic Diversity and Unprecedented Biosynthetic Treasure of the Phylum Myxococcota

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Natural products remain vital sources of therapeutics, and the phylum Myxococcota constitutes an especially rich reservoir for them. Based on decades of microbiological efforts, we present 154 new Myxococcota genomes and revise taxonomy quadrupling the number of families and genera.

Causes of interannual to decadal variability of Gila River streamflow over the past century

open access: yesJournal of Hydrology: Regional Studies, 2015
Study region: The Gila River, New Mexico, is characterized by two peaks in streamflow: one in the winter–spring (December–May), and summer (August–September). The region is influenced both by Pacific SST variability as well as the North American Monsoon.

Decadal Variability of the Extratropical Response to the Madden–Julian Oscillation

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2023
The Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO) is the leading mode of sub‐seasonal variability in the tropical atmosphere and is a source of predictability for extratropical weather through its teleconnections. MJO teleconnection patterns can be modulated by the El

Groundwater Rise Sustains the World's Largest Alpine Water System Under Global Warming

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Shallow groundwater depth (SGWD) across the non‐permafrost plains of the Qinghai–Xizang Plateau decreased at averagely 0.02 m year−1, adding 31.44 Gt of freshwater storage from 2000 to 2020 and sustaining ∼53 500 km2 of alpine ecosystems. A vadose‐zone capacity of 426.6 Gt reveals these aquifers as promising reservoirs, highlighting groundwater's ...
