Island Invader: Rugulopteryx okamurae and the Challenge for Macaronesian Coasts

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 36, Issue 9, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Since 2015, Rugulopteryx okamurae, a brown seaweed native to the Northwest Pacific, has become one of the most conspicuous marine invaders in the European continental coastal waters. Its recent establishment in the Macaronesian archipelagos (the Azores, Madeira and Canary Islands) has produced significant ecological changes, including ...

Intracellular pH measurements in the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas)

open access: yes, 2020
Intracellular pH was measured using the dye BCECF (live cell imaging) in the mantle epithelial cells of the Pacific oyster (C. gigas). Intracellular pH was measured under the presence of modified seawater solutions (low sodium, low bicarbonate) and ...

Invasive mammals disrupt sea–land nutrient inputs over 169 years on subtropical oceanic islands

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Invasive mammals have severely impacted oceanic islands, reducing or extirpating seabird populations and driving the collapse of nutrient flows with lasting ecosystem effects. We investigated these dynamics on contrasting subtropical oceanic islands in the South Pacific: Rangitāhua, a large island where goats, cats, and rats caused the ...

Introduction, establishment and expansion of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas in the Oosterschelde (SW Netherlands) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas was first introduced as an exotic species by oyster farmers in 1964 in the Oosterschelde estuary (SW Netherlands). The initial phase is not well documented but first natural spatfall was recorded in 1975.

The 2025 Kamchatka Earthquake and Tsunami: Cascading Impacts and Risks to Japan

open access: yesEarthquake Engineering &Structural Dynamics, Volume 55, Issue 11, Page 2837-2854, September 2026.
ABSTRACT On July 29th, 2025, a large earthquake (Mw 8.8) occurred near the Kamchatka Peninsula. This event caused a tsunami that reached Japan's Pacific coast, even though the source was far away. In this study, we analyze the characteristics of earthquakes and tsunamis and discuss how they relate to the recurrence possibility and risk in Japan.

Effects of Different Drying Methods on the Meat Quality and Characteristic Flavor Compounds of Pacific White Shrimp

open access: yesFood Frontiers, Volume 7, Issue 5, September 2026.
Different drying strategies regulated meat quality and characteristic flavor formation in Litopenaeus vannamei through distinct thermal and dehydration effects. HAFD enhanced non‐volatile umami compounds by promoting free amino acids, GMP, and EUC accumulation, whereas HAD and AFD intensified roasted‐aroma formation through pyrazines, aldehydes, esters,

Microbial education plays a crucial role in harnessing the beneficial properties of microbiota for infectious disease protection in Crassostrea gigas

open access: yesScientific Reports
The increase in marine diseases, particularly in economically important mollusks, is a growing concern. Among them, the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) production faces challenges from several diseases, such as the Pacific Oyster Mortality Syndrome ...
