A Versatile Model for Packet Loss Visibility and its Application to Packet Prioritization [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Image Processing, 2010
In this paper, we propose a generalized linear model for video packet loss visibility that is applicable to different group-of-picture structures. We develop the model using three subjective experiment data sets that span various encoding standards (H.264 and MPEG-2), group-of-picture structures, and decoder error concealment choices.

Performance of the modified clock skew estimator and its upper bound for the IEEE 1588v2 (PTP) case under packet loss and fractional Gaussian noise environment

open access: yesFrontiers in Physics, 2023
Precision Time Protocol (PTP) is a time protocol based on the Master and Slave exchanging messages with time stamps. In practical PTP systems, we have packet loss, a phenomenon where some of the PTP messages get lost in the Network.

Handling packet loss in WebRTC [PDF]

open access: yes2013 IEEE International Conference on Image Processing, 2013
WebRTC is an open-source real-time interactive audio and video communication framework. This paper discusses some of the mechanisms utilized in WebRTC to handle packet losses in the video communication path. Various system details are discussed and an adaptive hybrid NACK/FEC method with temporal layers is presented.

S frame design for multiple description video coding [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Multiple description (MD) video coding generates several descriptions so that any subset of descriptions can reconstruct video, which provides much error resilience. But most of the current MD video coding schemes are for two descriptions and for "on-off"

Detecting Malicious Packet Losses

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems, 2009
In this paper, we consider the problem of detecting whether a compromised router is maliciously manipulating its stream of packets. In particular, we are concerned with a simple yet effective attack in which a router selectively drops packets destined for some victim.

On Kalman Smoothing With Random Packet Loss [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, 2008
This correspondence studies the performance of Kalman fixed lag smoothers with random packet losses and its comparison with the Kalman filter with packet loss. In terms of estimator stability via boundedness of the expectation of the error covariance, we show that smoothing does not provide any benefit over filtering.
