TNAP and Pain Control [PDF]

open access: possible, 2015
Chronic pain is one of the most debilitating and expensive diseases, yet current therapies are often insufficient in bringing about long-term relief. Further, many treatments for chronic pain also carry significant side effects. Descending control of pain

Progress in Neurobiology, 2002
Upon receipt in the dorsal horn (DH) of the spinal cord, nociceptive (pain-signalling) information from the viscera, skin and other organs is subject to extensive processing by a diversity of mechanisms, certain of which enhance, and certain of which inhibit, its transfer to higher centres.

Serotonin in Pain and Pain Control

2010
Abstract In pain processing and modulation, serotonin (5-hydroxtryptamine, 5-HT) has excitatory (hyperalgesic) and inhibitory (analgesic) actions, depending on the site of action, the cell type and the type of receptor. In the periphery, 5-HT sensitizes afferent nerve fibers, thus contributing to inflammatory and neuropathic hyperalgesia.
