Remarks on quantization of Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillators [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
This work is concerned with a quantization of the Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillators from the point of view of their multi-Hamiltonian structures. It is shown that the 2n-th order oscillator with a simple spectrum is equivalent to the usual anisotropic n ...

Prognostic Value of Psoas Major Muscle Volume in Assessing Sarcopenia in Elderly Patients With Rectal Cancer

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
This study investigates the prognostic utility of a novel volumetric indicator—psoas volume index (PVI)—for assessing sarcopenia in elderly rectal cancer patients. Sarcopenia classified by our proposed PVI cut‐off values was associated with poor nutritional and inflammatory status, and patients with low PVI showed significantly worse long‐term outcomes.

Three problems of intergenerational justice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Intergenerational justice raises profound questions about the appropriate scope, pattern and currency of distribution. In this short article, I evaluate three arguments for restricting justice to dealings amongst contemporaries and argue that each can be

Unruh effect detection through chirality in curved graphene

open access: yes, 2017
We analyze a generalization of the analogue Unruh effect based on curved graphene. To this end, we consider the fourth order in derivatives field theoretic version of the Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator, for which the Unruh effect may be interpreted as the ...

Can Core Flows inferred from Geomagnetic Field Models explain the Earth's Dynamo? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We test the ability of large scale velocity fields inferred from geomagnetic secular variation data to produce the global magnetic field of the Earth. Our kinematic dynamo calculations use quasi-geostrophic (QG) flows inverted from geomagnetic field ...
