The difficult task of estimating recurrence intervals for large floods has long plagued hydrologists because statistical measures fail when return intervals of floods exceed the length of historical data sets. Sediments deposited in the backwaters of large floods may accumulate thick sequences in tributary mouths.

Surface water hydrology: Historical and paleoflood information
Reviews of Geophysics, 1987Recent developments have greatly increased the likelihood that historical and paleoflood investigations can provide useful hydrologic flood‐frequency information. Advances in the dating of paleofloods, and in methods for estimating paleoflood discharges, have had their greatest impact on a relatively new procedure: the analysis of slackwater deposit ...

RECONSTRUCTING PALEOFLOOD HYDROLOGY WITH SLACKWATER DEPOSITS: VERDE RIVER, ARIZONA
Physical Geography, 1985Fine-grained slackwater flood deposits provide a key to the paleoflood history of the Verde River in central Arizona. During large flows, the slackwater deposits accumulate in areas of sharply reduced flow velocity at channel expansions and contractions or in back-flooded tributaries.

Paleoflood Hydrology and Flood Frequency Analysis
Water Resources Research, 1986Techniques recently developed in paleohydrology enable the estimation of discharges and dates of occurrence of flood events which occurred thousands of years ago. We use computer simulation to assess whether a single paleoflood estimate, when included in a single‐site or regional flood frequency analysis procedure, gives a worthwhile increase in the ...

Holocene Paleoflood Hydrology of the Lower Deschutes River, Oregon
2013Flood deposits at four sites along the lower Deschutes River, Oregon, were analyzed to determine magnitude and frequency of late Holocene flooding. Deposit stratigraphy was combined with hydraulic modeling at two sites to determine ranges of likely discharges for individual deposits. Combining these results with gaged flood data provides improved flood

Abstract A detailed field study was conducted on the palaeoflood deposit profile in the Baoji–Tianshui Gorge in the upper Weihe River. The sequence of palaeoflood events was established through field observation and grain size analysis with chronological supports from Optical stimulated luminescence (OSL) dates and from archaeologically-constrained ...
