Abstract To aid California's water sector to better understand and manage future climate extremes, we present a method for creating a regionally consistent ensemble of plausible daily future climate and streamflow scenarios that represent natural climate variability captured in a network of tree‐ring chronologies, and then embed anthropogenic climate ...

Charred jack pine snags provide unique paleoclimatic data in the Canadian boreal forest. Spring temperature reconstructions from these trees indicate cooler than average springs at the end of the Little Ice Age, with multi‐decadal cold and warm phases, before transitioning to warmer springs since approximately 1940.

Abstract Favorable topographic gradients and channel bed aggradation are often cited as primers for river channel avulsion. Sylhet Basin in Bangladesh subsides relatively rapidly and presents a topographically favorable channel course for the Brahmaputra River.

River connectivity and climate behind the long‐term evolution of tropical American floodplain lakes
We present a multi‐proxy approach on short sedimentary cores form two neotropical flood plain lakes associated with the Magdalena River, Colombia, to study temporal variation in diatoms, sediment geochemistry and climate. We proposed that lake hydrological connectivity to the Magdalena River is a main factor controlling lake long‐term responses to ...

Improvements to Flood Frequency Analysis on Alluvial Rivers Using Paleoflood Data
Abstract Hydrologists and engineers routinely use flood frequency analyses to compute flood probabilities for mitigation, infrastructure planning, and emergency management. Conventional flood frequency analyses—in which annual discharge maxima from a stream gage are fit to a statistical probability distribution—often encounter large uncertainties when ...

Time series of observed River Ammer flood years for the period 1926–1999 AD (blue bars) and years with a flood layer in Lake Ammer sediments (red bars) for the period 3550 BP to 1999 AD show pronounced interannual to millennial scale variations. Part of this variability is related to solar irradiance forcing on atmospheric blocking frequency over ...

A Holocene "frozen accident": sediments of extreme paleofloods and fires in the bedrock-confined upper Huis River, Western Cape, South Africa [PDF]
Wildfires and flooding events are common and are forceful intrinsic controls over landscape evolution, biodiversity, and preserved sediment architecture in dryland environments.

Abstract Climate conditions and instantaneous depositional events can influence the relative contribution of sediments from terrestrial and marine environments and ultimately the quantity and composition of carbon buried in the sediment record. Here, we analyze the elemental, isotopic, and organic geochemical composition of marine sediments to identify
