‘Civilizing’ Smallholders Through Oil Palm: The Politics of Subsumption Across Southern Mexico's Commodity Frontiers

open access: yesJournal of Agrarian Change, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT While most frontier studies associate commodity expansions with dispossession, I argue that such expansions can also function as ‘civilizational’ projects aimed at overcoming traditional farming and creating new rural subjects better suited to the needs of capitalist development. Using a Gramscian approach to study subsumption, I analyse three

Exploring the Neural Substrates of Number Sense: A Perspective on Genetics, Behaviour and Neural Circuity

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Neuroscience, Volume 63, Issue 8, April 2026.
Numerical cognition arises from conserved mechanisms linking genes, neural circuits and behaviour. Using zebrafish as a tractable model, behavioural assays, whole‐brain imaging and genetic analyses can be integrated to identify neural and molecular bases of quantity discrimination. This framework provides a platform for studying numerical cognition and

What is the evidence that counter‐wildlife crime interventions are effective for conserving African, Asian and Latin American wildlife directly threatened by exploitation? A systematic map

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 5, Issue 2, April/June 2024.
Results of our systematic map indicate that despite a relatively large evidence base on the effectiveness of counter‐wildlife crime (CWC) interventions for conserving wildlife, most interventions have not been rigorously evaluated. Studies often lacked comparators and experimental designs.

Drivers of sunbird‐plant interactions on Mount Cameroon: Between neutrality and niche‐based processes

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 56, Issue 1, Page 136-148, January 2024.
Sunbird‐plant interactions on MountCameroon are driven by both neutral and niche‐based processes. The importance of niche‐based processes increases during the rainy season, due to the phenology of specialized of ornithophilous flowers. Moreover, we can confirm the importance of the correlation between tube and bill length.
