Prevalence of the palmaris longus through clinical evaluation

Surgical and Radiologic Anatomy, 2009
Most standard textbooks of hand surgery report on the rate of palmaris longus muscle absence of 15%. The aim of the study was to determine the absence of palmaris longus and to correlate it with age, sex and body side. The study included 800 subjects (400 male and 400 female).

Palmaris longus, anteductor of the thumb An experimental study

open access: yesHand, 1976
Palmaris longus contributes to the anteposition and pronation of the thumb under normal circumstances. It is however restricted by its medial tendon which runs into the palmar aponeurosis. The division of this tendon and the mobilisation of the muscular head of the abductor pollicis brevis arising from its lateral tendon will substantially accentuate ...

Epifascial accessory palmaris longus muscle

open access: yesClinical Anatomy, 2006
In hand reconstructive surgery the palmaris longus muscle is one of the most utilized donor site for tendon reconstruction procedures. However, its anatomic position is variable and anatomic variations may be responsible for median nerve compression. We report the case of a 40-year-old, right-handed woman, who presented with numbness and paresthesias ...

A Fleshy Palmaris Longus Muscle [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The most commonly reported variations of the Palmaris longus muscle are in its presence and the number of bellies. We however report a new variation, in which the muscle was entirely fleshy, instead of the predominantly tendinous muscle. This rare variant can pose a challenge to a surgeon in the exploration of the carpal tunnel, and compress the distal

Shape variations of the long palmaris longus muscle [Musculus palmaris longus şekil varyasyonlari]

open access: yes, 2001
In this experience morphologic variations and existence of palmaris longus muscle was present in only two cases (4.5%). Palmaris longus muscle morpohlogy was studied in two groups. The location of the palmaris longus tendine which is important in surgery was studied as three groups.

Prevalence of the palmaris longus in relation to the hand dominance

Surgical and Radiologic Anatomy, 2010
The incidence of left-handedness in the general population is between 8 and 15%. There is a presumption that the prevalence of palmaris longus muscle differ between right-handed and left-handed people. This prospective study was conducted to determine the prevalence of the palmaris longus in relation to the hand dominance. The study included 542 ...

Ultrasound determination of presence, length and diameter of the palmaris longus tendon

open access: yesJournal of Hand Surgery: European Volume, 2018
Inadvertent median nerve harvest is a devastating complication of palmaris longus harvest. Accurate assessment of palmaris longus presence and dimensions preoperatively would minimize this risk and assure safe harvest.

Reversed palmaris longus muscle: Anatomical variant – case report and literature review

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Plastic Surgery, 2013
The palmaris longus, a slender fusiform muscle, is especially prone to exhibiting anatomical variance relative to other muscles in the upper extremity.

Palmaris Longus Opponensplasty

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 1995
Camitz 1 used the palmaris longus extended by the proximal half of the palmar aponeurosis as an abductorplasty in patients with severe carpal tunnel syndrome and thenar atrophy. More recently Littler and Li, 2 Braun, 3 and Terrono et al. 4 have reported the use of this transfer.

Accessory Slip of the Palmaris Longus Muscle

Annals of Plastic Surgery, 1995
We discuss the case of a patient presenting an accessory slip of the palmaris longus (PL) muscle, which caused symptoms of median nerve compression on his left forearm. An asymptomatically anomalous distal PL belly contralaterally is also reported, and the clinical relevance and diagnosis of PL anomalies are discussed.
