Distinct C4 sub‐types and C3 bundle sheath isolation in the Paniceae grasses [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Direct, 2021
In C4 plants, the enzymatic machinery underpinning photosynthesis can vary, with, for example, three distinct C4 acid decarboxylases being used to release CO2 in the vicinity of RuBisCO.

Phylogenetics of Paniceae (Poaceae) [PDF]

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, 2001
Paniceae demonstrate unique variability of photosynthetic physiology and anatomy, including both non‐Kranz and Kranz species and all subtypes of the latter. This variability suggests hypotheses of independent origin or reversals (e.g., from C4 to C3). These hypotheses can be tested by phylogenetic analysis of independent molecular characters.

Mechanical Strength: An Unrecognised Target in the Genetic Improvement of Crops. [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Biotechnol J
ABSTRACT Leaf angle (LA) is a crucial agronomic trait influencing planting density and crop yield. Previous research highlighted the importance of cellular variations in the ligular region for determining LA, but the underlying regulatory mechanisms remain unclear.

Phylogeny and photosynthesis of the grass tribe Paniceae [PDF]

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, 2015
PREMISE OF THE STUDY:The grass tribe Paniceae includes important food, forage, and bioenergy crops such as switchgrass, napiergrass, various millet species, and economically important weeds. Paniceae are also valuable for answering scientific and evolutionary questions about C4 photosynthetic evolution, drought tolerance, and spikelet variation ...

Systematics and Phylogenetic Placement of Panicum L. Species within the Melinidinae Based on Morphological, Anatomical, and Molecular Data (Poaceae, Panicoideae, Paniceae) [PDF]

open access: yesPlants, 2023
Generic boundaries of the African species Panicum deustum Thunb., Panicum trichocladum Hack. ex K. Schum., and Panicum vollesenii Renvoize are analyzed and compared with related genera of the tribe Paniceae and the subtribe Melinidinae.

A nuclear phylogenomic tree of grasses (Poaceae) recovers current classification despite gene tree incongruence. [PDF]

open access: yesNew Phytol
Summary Grasses (Poaceae) comprise c. 11 800 species and are central to human livelihoods and terrestrial ecosystems. Knowing their relationships and evolutionary history is key to comparative research and crop breeding. Advances in genome‐scale sequencing allow for increased breadth and depth of phylogenomic analyses, making it possible to infer a new

Understanding spikelet orientation in Paniceae (Poaceae)

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, 2010
Spikelet structure and grouping are key characters to identify grasses. Here we tested the possibility that spikelet pairs, a distinctive morphological structure of many Andropogoneae and Paniceae, are the starting point for a secondary single spikelet condition that can also explain the change of spikelet orientation among Paniceae genera.

Microparticles from dental calculus disclose paleoenvironmental and palaeoecological records. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
Dental calculus analysis reveals evidence about past dietary ecology and plant diversity. This multi‐proxy study focuses on pollen and non‐pollen palynomorphs. We detected plants referable to woody habitats and warm‐temperate climates. Clues about past ecological and environmental issues of Central Italy were found.
