Gene turnover in the common ancestor of all C4 grasses

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Understanding how plants evolve more efficient photosynthesis is important in a warming world where improving crop productivity and resilience is a global priority. By generating the first reference genomes for an early‐diverging group of grasses called the Aristidoideae, we were able to reconstruct the genetic makeup of the last common ancestor of all

Classification and Biogeography of Panicoideae (Poaceae) in the New World

open access: yesAliso, 2007
Panicoideae (Poaceae) in the New World comprise 107 genera (86 native) and 1357 species (1248 native). As circumscribed herein, Panicoideae include eight tribes: Andropogoneae, Arundinelleae, Centotheceae, Gynerieae, Isachneae, Paniceae, Steyermarkochloeae, and Thysanolaeneae.

Complete Chloroplast Genome of Indonesian Sugarcane (Saccharum ‘Bululawang’): Comparative, Structural, and Evolutionary Analysis of Photosystem I‐Encoding Genes

open access: yesJournal of Sustainable Agriculture and Environment, Volume 5, Issue 3, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Sugarcane is one of the most important crops, providing the majority of global sugar production and serving as a major feedstock for bioenergy. Increasing demands for sustainable sugar production under climate and productivity constraint have intensified the need for molecular‐level characterization of elite cultivars.

CHROMOSOME STUDIES IN AMERICAN PANICOIDEAE (POACEAE)1

open access: yesAnnals of the Missouri Botanical Garden, 2006
Abstract Chromosome numbers and observations on meiotic chromosome behavior of 37 taxa of American Panicoideae are given. The taxa studied are: Axonopus scoparius (Flugge) Kuhlm., Cenchrus myosuroides Kunth, Dichanthelium aciculare var. aciculare (Desv. ex Poir.) Gould & C. A. Clark, D. acuminatum var. acuminatum (Sw.) A Meta‐Analysis Reveals That the Protective Role of Silicon in Grasses Against Fungal Pathogens Depends on Infection Mechanism

open access: yesPlant, Cell &Environment, Volume 49, Issue 8, Page 5947-5964, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Pathogen infection drives plant community structure and constrains global agricultural productivity. Silicon (Si) improves resistance to abiotic and herbivory stress, particularly in grasses, but relatively little attention has addressed Si‐mediated resistance to pathogens, nor has it tested how this varies according to the type of plant and ...

Mechanical Strength: An Unrecognised Target in the Genetic Improvement of Crops

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, Volume 24, Issue 6, Page 4190-4203, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Leaf angle (LA) is a crucial agronomic trait influencing planting density and crop yield. Previous research highlighted the importance of cellular variations in the ligular region for determining LA, but the underlying regulatory mechanisms remain unclear.

A pleiotropic “stretch” phenotype is associated with metaxylem vessel element length, axial hydraulic conductance, root elongation, water utilization, and drought adaptation in maize

open access: yesCrop Science, Volume 66, Issue 3, May/June 2026.
Abstract We tested the hypothesis that metaxylem phenotypes influence drought adaptation in maize (Zea mays L.) through in silico modeling and empirical studies under water deficit in controlled environments and in the field. Substantial genotypic variation for metaxylem vessel element length (MVEL) was observed. Longer MVEL was correlated with reduced
