Socio-economic conditions affect health-related quality of life, during recovery from acute SARS-CoV-2 infection

open access: yesBMC Infectious Diseases
Background Recovery from acute COVID-19 may be slow and incomplete: cases of Post-Acute Sequelae of COVID (PASC) are counted in millions, worldwide. We aimed to explore if and how the pre-existing Socio-economic-status (SES) influences such recovery ...

A Soft Robotic Fish With a Dielectric Elastomer Actuator Body and Negative Stiffness Spine

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This work introduces a bio‐mimetic soft robotic fish driven by fiber‐reinforced dielectric elastomer actuators integrated as its body. By prestretching this active skin against a flexible spine, a negative stiffness system is created, enabling large‐amplitude bending.

The $\gamma^* \gamma^*$ total cross section in next-to-leading order BFKL and LEP2 data

open access: yes, 2014
We study the total cross section for the collision of two highly-virtual photons at large energies, taking into account the BFKL resummation of energy logarithms with full next-to-leading accuracy.

Advances in Electroactive Liquid Crystal Elastomers for Intelligent Robotics and Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Electroactive liquid crystal elastomers (eLCEs) integrate molecular anisotropy with electrical functionality to enable programmable actuation and reconfigurable electronics. This review classifies eLCEs into robotic actuators and adaptive electronics, summarizes key actuation mechanisms, and highlights fabrication strategies that bridge materials to ...

Transmisión “intergeneracional” (agámica) de la tolerancia al estrés hídrico en Solanum tuberosum cv. Achat

open access: yesRIA: Revista Investigaciones Agropecuarias, 2018
Los diferentes estreses tanto bióticos como abióticos afectan diversos cultivos y causan grandes pérdidas económicas. En los últimos años se han desarrollado estrategias para obtener plantas tolerantes a los diferentes estreses abióticos, que comprenden ...

Endogenous “Time Bomb” – Mislocalized Phospholipase A2 as a Critical Mediator of Ultra‐Rapid Mortality in Sepsis and Acute Lung Injury

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Phospholipase A2 (PLA2), a dormant enzyme, becomes lethal when activated—collapsing lungs in minutes. Our dual therapy (DOPS + varespladib) boosts survival from 0% to >90% in sepsis/ALI. A breakthrough for acute lung injury treatment. ABSTRACT This study reveals that phospholipase A2 (PLA2), normally stable and nontoxic, can be activated specifically ...

On the Origins of Toughness in Corymbia calophylla (Marri Tree) Nuts

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We uncover the natural toughening mechanisms of the marri nut, including fiber pullout, crack deflection, and a viscoelastic matrix, which enable exceptional energy absorption and ductility comparable to Teflon, with an elastic modulus similar to acrylic.

Interfacial Engineering by Metallic Ions and Organic Ammonium Ligand Passivation for Perovskite Solar Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A synergistic approach using phenethylammonium iodide (PEAI) and antimony iodide (SbI3) enhances the operational stabilities of perovskite solar cells by providing p‐type doping effect, suitable band energy alignment, reduced defect density, and minimized surface ion vacancies in the perovskite films.

End-to-end algorithm for hierarchical area searches for long-duration GW sources for GEO 600 [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
We describe a hierarchical, highly parallel computer algorithm to perform searches for unknown sources of continuous gravitational waves -- spinning neutron stars in the Galaxy -- over wide areas of the sky and wide frequency bandwidths.
