Two Pillars of My Path in Cytopathology: Mentorship From Training to Practice

open access: yesDiagnostic Cytopathology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Mentorship has been a cornerstone of my professional development in cytopathology, shaping both my diagnostic acumen and academic identity. Under the guidance of Dr. Claire Michael during residency and fellowship, I was introduced to a culture of intellectual rigor, systems thinking, and continuous improvement.

Safety and Efficacy of Extracorporeal Photopheresis for Acute and Chronic Graft-versus-Host Disease

open access: yesPharmaceuticals
Background/Objectives: Despite novel biological agents, steroid-dependent or -refractory graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) remains a severe complication of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT).

Use of the Ion Robot in the Diagnosis of Pulmonary Nodules: Fine Needle Aspiration Versus Cryobiopsy

open access: yesDiagnostic Cytopathology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Robotic‐assisted bronchoscopy platforms provide an innovative approach to the sampling of pulmonary nodules. As compared to other technologies, fiber‐optic shape‐sensing instrumentation allows for a more precise, accurate location and sampling of the target lesion with fewer complications.

Cumulative Cytological Assessment of Repeated Non‐Diagnostic Thyroid Fine Needle Aspirations: A Novel Approach to Reduce Diagnostic Uncertainty

open access: yesDiagnostic Cytopathology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Purpose Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is the primary diagnostic tool for evaluating thyroid nodules. However, 10%–21% of FNAs yield non‐diagnostic (ND) results (Bethesda category I). Repeated ND findings occur in 25%–67.5% of cases, creating diagnostic uncertainty and increased healthcare costs.

Safety and long-term efficacy of autologous hematopoietic cell transplantation for patients with systemic sclerosis

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine
Autologous hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) has been introduced for patients with severe systemic sclerosis (SSc). We aimed to assess the safety and long-term efficacy of HCT modality for severe SSc, refractory to conventional therapy, in 17 ...

The Diagnostic Value of Immunohistochemistry and Biomarkers in the Diagnosis of Mesothelioma in Pleural/Peritoneal Effusions

open access: yesDiagnostic Cytopathology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Mesothelioma is a rare tumor that arises from the serosal cells lining the serous cavities, most commonly the pleura followed by the peritoneum. Presenting symptoms include pleuritic pain and bloody effusions that recur. Although cytologic analysis cannot determine the mesothelial subtype or in situ from invasive disease, the ...

Nodular Fasciitis of the Parotid Gland Mimicking Pleomorphic Adenoma: Cytological Features of a Diagnostic Pitfall

open access: yesDiagnostic Cytopathology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Nodular fasciitis (NF) is a self‐limiting mesenchymal neoplasm that typically occurs in the subcutaneous tissue of the extremities, trunk, and head and neck region; involvement of the parotid gland is very rare. The cytological features of NF can closely mimic those seen in salivary gland neoplasms, particularly pleomorphic adenoma (PA ...

Targeted Genotyping of MIS-C Patients Reveals a Potential Alternative Pathway Mediated Complement Dysregulation during COVID-19 Infection

open access: yesCurrent Issues in Molecular Biology, 2022
Complement dysregulation has been documented in adults with COVID-19 and implicated in relevant pediatric inflammatory responses against SARS-CoV-2. We propose that signatures of complement missense coding SNPs associated with dysregulation could also be
