Papaver somniferum (opium poppy) is an annual plant in the Papaveraceae (poppy family) that originated in Mediterranean region and Western Asia. Opium poppy is very easy to grow from seed, since they are well known for self-sowing. It is the only species of Papaver used to produce opium.
