Hydrogen Bond Network‐Enhanced Zincophilic Hydroxypropyl Cellulose Hybrid Layer for an Ultra‐Stable Zinc Metal Anode

open access: yesCarbon Energy
As an earth‐abundant and natural biopolymer, cellulose has received significant attention in aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (AZIBs) due to its inherent sustainability and non‐toxicity, aligning perfectly with the core advantages of AZIBs.

Preliminary Modeling of Single Pulp Fiber Using an Improved Mass–Spring Method

open access: yesSolids
An improved Mass–Spring Model (iMSM) is developed by adding central springs to the conventional Mass–Spring Models (MSMs) of tubular structures. This improvement is necessary to model fibers that have enough stiffness so that they do not collapse under ...

Flexible Graphite-on-Paper Piezoresistive Sensors

open access: yesSensors, 2012
We demonstrate novel graphite-on-paper piezoresistive devices. The graphite was used as sensing component. The fabrication process can be finished in a short time with simple tools (e.g., a scissor and a pencil).

Establishing an assay to evaluate d‐amino acid oxidase enzyme kinetics and inhibition using WST‐8 redox dye

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study investigated a novel WST‐8‐based assay for evaluating d‐Amino acid oxidase (DAO) inhibitors. We confirmed its effectiveness using known inhibitors and found that uremic toxins possess relatively weak inhibitory activity compared to existing drugs.

Priority Dissolution of Hemicellulose and its Subsequent Value-added Utilization along with High Activity Lignin

open access: yesBioResources
In lignocellulosic biorefineries, efficiently and cleanly deconstructing the stubborn structure of plant cell walls to achieve component separation remains a research hotspot. Among these, the high-value utilization of lignin is limited by its purity and

Simple and Inexpensive Paper-Based Astrocyte Co-culture to Improve Survival of Low-Density Neuronal Networks

open access: yesFrontiers in Neuroscience, 2018
Bottom-up neuroscience aims to engineer well-defined networks of neurons to investigate the functions of the brain. By reducing the complexity of the brain to achievable target questions, such in vitro bioassays better control experimental variables and ...

Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.

Biotechnology in New Zealand: Description and analysis based on the 1998/99 and 2002 biotech surveys and a review of secondary sources

open access: yes, 2004
This paper provides a detailed description of the New Zealand biotechnology sector based on a re-analysis of the first comprehensive (1998/99) survey of biotechnology in New Zealand, data from an original (2002) survey conducted by the author and a ...

Portfolio management fees: assets or profits based compensation? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
This paper compares assets-based portfolio management fees to profits-based fees. Whilst both forms of compensation can provide appropriate risk incentives, fund managers' limited liability induces more excess risk-taking under a profits-based fee ...
