Postural analysis reveals persistent changes in paper wasp foundress behavioral state after conspecific challenge

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2023
Vigilant animals detect and respond to threats in the environment, often changing posture and movement patterns. Vigilance is modulated not only by predators but also by conspecific threats.

3.6 and 4.5 $\mu$m ${\it Spitzer}$ Phase Curves of the Highly-Irradiated Hot Jupiters WASP-19b and HAT-P-7b [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
We analyze full-orbit phase curve observations of the transiting hot Jupiters WASP-19b and HAT-P-7b at 3.6 and 4.5 $\mu$m obtained using the Spitzer Space Telescope.

Semiochemical applications for managing the grey field slug (Deroceras reticulatum Müller), a major pest of arable crops

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Trends in semiochemical research highlight promising attractants and repellents for ‘push–pull’ pest control strategies of the grey field slug. Extracts from plants, predators, entomopathogenic fungi, and essential oils demonstrate potential in modifying grey field slug behaviour, inducing avoidance, antifeeding responses, or mortality, offering ...

First record of parasitic wasp Trichogramma brassicae Bezdenko, 1968 (Hymenoptera, Trichogrammatidae) in Slovenia

open access: yesActa Agriculturae Slovenica, 2015
The paper presents the parasitic wasp, which occurrence in Slovenia was first confirmed in August 2014 on egg layers of cabbage moth (Mamestra brassicae) from cabbage.

Do Primitively Eusocial Wasps Use Queen Pheromones to Regulate Reproduction? A Case Study of the Paper Wasp Polistes satan

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2019
In several highly eusocial insect species with morphologically distinct castes, queen-characteristic cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) have been shown to act as queen signals that suppress the reproduction of nestmate workers.

Multi-filter transit observations of WASP-39b and WASP-43b with three San Pedro M\'artir telescopes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Three optical telescopes located at the San Pedro M\'artir National Observatory were used for the first time to obtain multi-filter defocused photometry of the transiting extrasolar planets WASP-39b and WASP-43b.

Epoxy tetrahydrophthalimides as potential bioactive agents: synthesis and computational study

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Epoxy tetrahydrophthalimides were synthesized and evaluated for phytotoxic activity. Some compounds showed greater inhibition than S‐metolachlor against Sorghum bicolor. Docking studies indicated interaction with mitogen‐activated protein kinase, suggesting it as a potential target.

Solar Panels as Novel Nest Sites for the European Paper Wasp Polistes dominula

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Solar energy facilities are rapidly expanding in their land‐use footprint worldwide, with significant implications for biodiversity. Although the impacts of conventional solar development are often negative for biodiversity, it is possible for some ...

Adaptive Nesting Tactics in a Paper Wasp, Polistes riparius, Inhabiting Cold Climatic Regions

open access: yesSociobiology, 2014
Thermal effects on the nest sizes constructed by Polistes riparius foundresses, their nesting activities, and colony compositions were determined in laboratory conditions during the pre-emergence period. In this study, foundresses were placed in cold (20°

Unrelated Helpers in a Primitively Eusocial Wasp: Is Helping Tailored Towards Direct Fitness? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The paper wasp Polistes dominulus is unique among the social insects in that nearly one-third of co-foundresses are completely unrelated to the dominant individual whose offspring they help to rear and yet reproductive skew is high.
