The sea urchin embryo: A model to study Alzheimer’s beta amyloid induced toxicity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia. The cause of AD is closely related to the accumulation of amyloid beta peptide in the neuritic plaques.

Cultivating Microalgae With Pickled Cabbage Wastewater: A Sustainable Alternative to Replacing Fishmeal in Sea Urchin (Tripneustes gratilla) Diets

open access: yesAquaculture Nutrition, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Recent studies have suggested that plant‐based proteins, such as algal powder, can partially replace fishmeal used in formulated aqua feeds while maintaining the growth performance of aquaculture species. In Taiwan, the traditional pickled cabbage industry produces high‐salinity wastewater rich in nutrients and microelements essential for plant growth.

Unravelling Hidden Trophic Interactions Among Sea Urchin Juveniles and Macroinvertebrates by DNA Amplification

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 34, Issue 24, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Rocky reefs may shift between two distinct stable states: productive algal forests, characterised by high abundance and biodiversity of macrofauna, and impoverished barrens, dominated by overgrazing sea urchins. Barren states may persist despite the recovery of adult sea urchin predators, suggesting additional stabilising mechanisms.

Sedimentology and geomorphology of tufa barrages on rock coast shore platforms

open access: yesSedimentology, Volume 72, Issue 7, Page 2173-2200, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Despite tufa deposits being widely distributed and increasingly recognised globally on rock coasts, their distribution in the tidal frame and geomorphology is poorly understood. The distribution, sedimentology and geomorphology of tufa barrages on supratidal rock coasts are assessed and their controls established.

Grazing halos reveal differential ecosystem vulnerabilities in vegetated habitats

open access: yesEcology, Volume 106, Issue 11, November 2025.
Abstract The dynamic balance between primary production and herbivory is key to the resilience of plant‐dominated ecosystems across the world. However, many vegetated ecosystems are becoming increasingly susceptible to herbivore‐triggered collapses, as this balance is disrupted due to predator declines, increasing nutrients, and other interacting ...

Antimicrobial peptides from echinoderms as antibiofilm agents: a natural strategy to combat bacterial infections [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Increased attention has been focused on marine invertebrates as a source of bioactive molecules for biomedical applications. Many bioactive molecules are part of the innate immune system.

Autophagy as a defense strategy against stress: focus on Paracentrotus lividus sea urchin embryos exposed to cadmium [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Autophagy is used by organisms as a defense strategy to face environmental stress. This mechanism has been described as one of the most important intracellular pathways responsible for the degradation and recycling of proteins and organelles.

Isolation and characterization of sea urchin P.lividus microbiota from coelomic fluid: bachelor's thesis : diploma 2016 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The identification of the microbiota present in the coelomic fluid of Paracentrotus lividus has been highlighted in order to understand the role of bacteria in the physiology, ecology and aquaculture activities of this ...

Picocyanobacteria From a Clade Of Marine Cyanobium Revealed Bioactive Potential Against Microalgae, Bacteria, And Marine [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The production of bioactive compounds either toxic or with pharmacological applications by cyanobacteria is well established. However, picoplanktonic forms within this group of organisms have rarely been studied in this context.

Effect of dissolved organic matter (DOM) of contrasting origins on Cu and Pb speciation and toxicity to Paracentrotus lividus larvae [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
4 tablas, 6 figurasWater samples of contrasting origin, including natural seawater, two sediment elutriates and sewage-influenced seawater, were collected and obtained to examine the effect of the dissolvedorganicmatter (DOM) present on metal ...
