A total of 205 tardigrades representing two orders, five families, nine genera and ten species were extracted from a moss sample (104 tardigrades) and a lichen sample (101 tardigrades) collected near Missoula, Montana, in 2016.

Environmental DNA sampling coupled with high‐throughput sequencing is increasingly recognized as a useful method for assessing biodiversity with potential applications in terrestrial environments. Rock pools on granite inselbergs support diverse aquatic communities, yet the application of eDNA to document their biodiversity is lacking.

Intertidal infaunal community data are obtained via: (1) morphological identification of macroinvertebrates from sediment cores, (2) cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) DNA metabarcoding of the same pooled macroinvertebrate specimens, and (3) 18S ribosomal RNA (18S) DNA metabarcoding of benthic meiofauna from small volume sediment surface scrapes.
