Tardigrades of North America: Additions to Montana’s Biodiversity Including a New Species, Platicrista loloensis nov. sp. (Parachela, Hypsibioidea, Itaquasconinae)

open access: yesDiversity
A total of 205 tardigrades representing two orders, five families, nine genera and ten species were extracted from a moss sample (104 tardigrades) and a lichen sample (101 tardigrades) collected near Missoula, Montana, in 2016.

Use of eDNA and conventional sampling methods to survey rock pool (gnamma) biodiversity on granite inselbergs

open access: yesAustral Ecology, Volume 49, Issue 8, August 2024.
Environmental DNA sampling coupled with high‐throughput sequencing is increasingly recognized as a useful method for assessing biodiversity with potential applications in terrestrial environments. Rock pools on granite inselbergs support diverse aquatic communities, yet the application of eDNA to document their biodiversity is lacking.

Marine sediment infauna‐based environmental assessment using metabarcoding identifies potential impact indicator species

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 6, Issue 3, May–June 2024.
Intertidal infaunal community data are obtained via: (1) morphological identification of macroinvertebrates from sediment cores, (2) cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) DNA metabarcoding of the same pooled macroinvertebrate specimens, and (3) 18S ribosomal RNA (18S) DNA metabarcoding of benthic meiofauna from small volume sediment surface scrapes.

Habitat conditions and not moss composition mediate microbial community structure in Swiss peatlands

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 26, Issue 5, May 2024.
Prokaryotes and microeukaryotes associated with moss play a pivotal role in preserving the functioning of peatland ecosystems. Therefore, it is crucial to identify the environmental variables that most significantly influence their composition. Our research, employing structural equation modelling and Mantel tests, underscores that it is not the ...
