Genetic differentiation of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase C subunit I gene in genus Paramecium (Protista, Ciliophora). [PDF]
BACKGROUND: The mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene is being used increasingly for evaluating inter- and intra-specific genetic diversity of ciliated protists. However, very few studies focus on assessing genetic divergence of the COI

Determination of the presence of 5-methylcytosine in Paramecium tetraurelia. [PDF]
5-methylcytosine DNA methylation regulates gene expression and developmental programming in a broad range of eukaryotes. However, its presence and potential roles in ciliates, complex single-celled eukaryotes with germline-somatic genome specialization ...

Novel insights into the genetic diversity of Balantidium and Balantidium-like cyst-forming ciliates [PDF]
Balantidiasis is considered a neglected zoonotic disease with pigs serving as reservoir hosts. However, Balantidium coli has been recorded in many other mammalian species, including primates. Here, we evaluated the genetic diversity of B.

Somewhere over the... what? [PDF]
In order to defend his controversial claim that observation is unaided perception, Bas van Fraassen, the originator of constructive empiricism, suggested that, for all we know, the images produced by a microscope could be in a situation analogous to that

Role of cilia activity and surrounding viscous fluid on properties of metachronal waves [PDF]
Large groups of active cilia collectively beat in a fluid medium as metachronal waves, essential for some microorganisms motility and for flow generation in mucociliary clearance. Several models can predict the emergence of metachronal waves, but what controls the properties of metachronal waves is still unclear.

Active spheroids in viscosity gradients [PDF]
In this paper, we explore the hydrodynamics of spheroidal active particles in viscosity gradients. This work provides a more accurate modeling approach, in comparison to spherical particles, for anisotropic organisms like Paramecium swimming through inhomogeneous environments, but more fundamentally examines the influence of particle shape on ...

Physiology and metabolism of eukaryotic microalgae involved in aquatic photosymbioses
Summary Symbiosis between eukaryotic microalgae and heterotrophic hosts is a widespread, phylogenetically convergent, and ecologically important phenomenon in aquatic ecosystems. Partners include taxonomically diverse microalgae interacting with multicellular or unicellular hosts in marine or freshwater environments.

Surrogate GPR139 Agonists Reverse Short‐Term Startle Habituation Impairment in Larval Zebrafish
Startled habituation deficit is a common cognitive symptom of schizophrenia patients. In blocks of repetitive startle stimuli delivery, MK‐801‐induced larval zebrafish showed a non‐habituating behavior to startle stimuli. A recovery on startle habituation occurred with co‐exposure of MK‐801 and GPR139 agonists.

Phosphoproteins associated with cyclic nucleotide stimulation of ciliary motility in Paramecium [PDF]
Permeabilized, MgATP-reactivated cells of Paramecium (models) respond to cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP by increasing forward swimming speed. In association with the motile response, cyclic AMP and 8-bromo-cyclic GMP (8-Br-cyclic GMP) stimulated protein ...
