Phosphoproteins associated with cyclic nucleotide stimulation of ciliary motility in Paramecium [PDF]
Permeabilized, MgATP-reactivated cells of Paramecium (models) respond to cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP by increasing forward swimming speed. In association with the motile response, cyclic AMP and 8-bromo-cyclic GMP (8-Br-cyclic GMP) stimulated protein ...

Fruit Flies Provide New Insights in Low-Radiation Background Biology at the INFN Underground Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) [PDF]
Deep underground laboratories (DULs) were originally created to host particle, astroparticle or nuclear physics experiments requiring a low-background environment with vastly reduced levels of cosmic-ray particle interference. More recently, the range of

A signal transduction blind spot: the function of adenylyl cyclase transmembrane domains
Transmembrane adenylyl cyclases (tmACs) are essential for synthesising the universal second messenger cyclic AMP. All tmACs share a common topology that includes a large 12‐helix transmembrane (TM) domain. This domain accounts for ~ 35% of the coding sequence but its function is still an open question.

This review briefly describes four physical and two physiological hypotheses that have been proposed on the mechanism of negative gravitaxis or geotaxis of Paramecium. In the hydrostatic hypothesis (Verworn, 1889), the density of the rear part of Paramecium is greater than that of the rest of the organism so that the body axis is tilted anterior upward

Temperature and Resources Interact to Affect Transmission via Host Foraging Rate and Susceptibility
Environmental conditions such as temperature and resource availability can shape disease transmission by altering contact rates and/or the probability of infection given contact. We develop mechanistic models and fit them to experimental data to uncover how temperature and resources jointly affect transmission of fungal parasites (Metschnikowia ...

Surrogate GPR139 Agonists Reverse Short‐Term Startle Habituation Impairment in Larval Zebrafish
Startled habituation deficit is a common cognitive symptom of schizophrenia patients. In blocks of repetitive startle stimuli delivery, MK‐801‐induced larval zebrafish showed a non‐habituating behavior to startle stimuli. A recovery on startle habituation occurred with co‐exposure of MK‐801 and GPR139 agonists.

When the path is never shortest: a reality check on shortest path biocomputation
Shortest path problems are a touchstone for evaluating the computing performance and functional range of novel computing substrates. Much has been published in recent years regarding the use of biocomputers to solve minimal path problems such as route ...

New stands of rare species of the Paramecium aurelia complex were found in Europe, i.e. P. pentaurelia and P. dodecaurelia in Italy and P. septaurelia in Germany. The species were identified by mating reactions with the standard strains of each species.
