Kinect posture reconstruction based on a local mixture of Gaussian process models [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Depth sensor based 3D human motion estimation hardware such as Kinect has made interactive applications more popular recently. However, it is still challenging to accurately recognize postures from a single depth camera due to the inherently noisy data ...

Relationships Between Spinal Curvature Parameters and Somatic Variables, Bone Mineral Density, Sedentary Habits and Physical Activity Levels in Young Adults: a Cross-Sectional Study [PDF]

open access: yesRehabilitacja Medyczna
Background: Postural disorders in young adults result in poorer physical performance and quality of life in old age. It is important to know the determinants of posture parameters among the young adult population. Objectives: The aim of the study is to ...

Confinement in Metal‐Organic Frameworks as a Route to Harnessing Liquid Barocalorics in the Solid‐State

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Encapsulation of solid–liquid barocalorics (BC) within MOFs harnesses their colossal BC performance whilst allowing active control of BC properties through BC‐MOF interactions. ABSTRACT Barocaloric (BC) effects at liquid–vapor transitions in hydrofluorocarbons drive most commercial technologies used for heating and cooling in the heating, ventilation ...

Trunk Inclination Estimate During the Sprint Start Using an Inertial Measurement Unit: A Validation Study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The proper execution of the sprint start is crucial in determining the performance during a sprint race. In this respect, when moving from the crouch to the upright position, trunk kinematics is a key element.

Architecture‐Driven Functional Coupling in Vertically Aligned Nanocomposites

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Vertically aligned nanocomposites define a growth‐engineered architecture in which vertical interfaces, strain fields, defect pathways, and phase connectivity are created simultaneously. This review shows how these architectural features couple ferroic, optical, ionic, electrochemical, and device responses, establishing design rules and open challenges

Influence of physical capacities of males with transtibial amputation on gait adjustments on sloped surfaces [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The aim of the study was to investigate how kinematic and kinetic adjustments between level and slope locomotion of persons with transtibial amputation are related to their individual muscular and functional capacities.

Covalent Functionalization of 2D Semiconductors: A Roadmap to Advanced Electronic Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This Review presents recent advances in the covalent functionalization strategies for two‐dimensional semiconductors and their implementation in modern technologies. Layered materials are modified through diverse molecular chemistries (e.g., thiols, diazonium salts, alkyl halides, and electron‐deficient species) to tailor their surface properties ...

Body segments decoupling in sitting: control of body posture from automatic chair adjustments [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Background Individuals who cannot functionally reposition themselves adopt a passive body posture and suffer from physical discomfort in long-term sitting.

Biodegradable 3D‐Printable and Coatable Antifouling Composites for Marine Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Marine biofouling damages submerged surfaces and raises greenhouse gas emissions. Biodegradable antifouling biocomposites were developed by hot‐mixing beeswax, Tween 80, and calcium stearate or stearic acid. Adjusting the component ratio enables processing via hot‐pressing, 3D‐printing, or dip‐coating.

Effect of vibration exposure duration on discomfort [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The comfort of a seated person exposed to vibration is known to depend on the magnitude, frequency content, and direction of the excitation. A review of the literature showed that very little is known about the effects of the duration of exposure to ...
