Ship Stability and Parametric Rolling

Australasian Journal of Engineering Education, 2009
1 INTRODUCTION The stability of ships is of vital importance to the maritime world, and for a variety of reasons is likely to become even more important in the future. For example, ships in general are becoming ever larger, and a growing number of cruise ships have more decks above the waterline, potentially raising their centre of gravity and ...

Real-Time Identification of Parametric Roll

Journal of Ship Research, 2022
_ The International Maritime Organization (IMO) provides criteria to assess the vulnerability of ships toward the phenomenon of parametric roll. Such long-term vulnerability assessments permit to qualify statistically the ships vulnerability regarding parametric roll.

Detection of Parametric Roll for Ships

2011
Recent years have shown several incidents with dramatic damage on container vessels caused by parametric resonance. When the resonance starts, the roll oscillation at a sub-harmonic frequency of the wave excitation may be completely unexpected. Timely warning about the onset of the resonance phenomenon could make the navigator to change ship’s speed ...

Probabilistic Properties of Parametric Roll

2011
The chapter considers statistical properties of parametric roll; the source of data is numerical simulation of parametric roll of a C11 class container carrier in head seas. The characteristics considered include estimates of spectral density, autocorrelation function. Special attention is paid to uncertainty of estimates of mean value and variance.

Parametric Roll and Ship Design

2011
The variety of vessels which can suffer from parametric roll is large. It has been observed on small fishing vessels sailing in following waves but also on large cruise and container vessels in head and following waves. The occurrence of parametric roll, with high roll angles, is governed by a complex combination of main dimensions, loading condition ...

Sensitivity in numerical analysis of parametric roll

Ocean Engineering, 2013
This study considers a numerical simulation of parametric roll, which causes serious safety issues for ships. The numerical simulation is carried out in regular waves and irregular waves for two container ships. In regular waves, parametric roll motion is simulated using two different time-domain methods: the impulse-response-function method and the 3D

Parametric Rolling of Ships – Then and Now

2011
Modern research on parametric rolling of ships was first conducted in Germany in the late 1930s. This work was initiated in an effort to explain the capsizing of some small ships such as coasters and fishing vessels in severe following seas. The work included experiments with models in open water as well as numerical and theoretical computations.

Alternating rolls in non degenerate optical parametric oscillators

Journal of Modern Optics, 1996
Pattern formation near threshold in large-aspect-ratio optical parametric oscillators with flat end reflectors and uniform pumping is investigated in the non-degenerate case. By deriving amplitude equations describing interaction of four orthogonal traveling waves, it is shown that, contrary to the degenerate case, a pure standing-wave pattern is ...

Evaluating Roll Damping in Parametric Rolling: Challenges and Approaches

The prediction of parametric rolling in ships remains a critical area of research due to the significant impact on maritime safety and vessel performance. Among the various parameters influencing parametric rolling, roll damping is notoriously challenging to assess due to its nonlinear nature.

Parametric Simulation of Rolling Contact Fatigue

ASME 2008 Rail Transportation Division Fall Technical Conference, 2008
Simulations of dynamic vehicle performance were used by the Wheel Defect Prevention Research Consortium (WDPRC) to explore which track and vehicle variables affect wheel fatigue life. A NUCARS® model was used to efficiently examine the effects of a multitude of parameters including wheel/rail profiles, wheel/rail lubrication, truck type, curvature ...
