Chagas Disease: Increased Parasitemia during Pregnancy Detected by Hemoculture [PDF]

open access: yesThe American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 2011
One hundred fifty-two Trypanosoma cruzi seropositive women were submitted to a single hemoculture; 101 were pregnant, and 51 were not pregnant. Seven tubes from each individual were harvested with liver infusion tryptose (LIT) medium and observed monthly until the fifth month. Hemocultures were positive in 50% (76 of 152) of the women.

Mosquito Infectivity and Parasitemia after Controlled Human Malaria Infection [PDF]

open access: yesThe American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 2018
Controlled Human Malaria Infection (CHMI) has become an increasingly important tool for the evaluation of drugs and vaccines. Controlled Human Malaria Infection has been demonstrated to be a reproducible model; however, there is some variability in time to onset of parasitemia between volunteers and studies.

Virulence of malaria is associated with differential expression of Plasmodium falciparum var gene subgroups in a case-control study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Plasmodium falciparum erythrocyte membrane protein 1 (PfEMP1) is a major pathogenicity factor in falciparum malaria that mediates cytoadherence. PfEMP1 is encoded by approximately 60 var genes per haploid genome.

In Vitro Antitrypanosomal and Antibacterial Activity of Aqueous, Hydroethanolic and Ethanolic Extracts of Rumex obtusifolius L. Leaf and Root

open access: yesBasic &Clinical Pharmacology &Toxicology, Volume 138, Issue 5, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Plant extracts are an important raw material for the development of new drugs. Rumex obtusifolius L., popularly known as ‘bitter dock’, has significant pharmacological properties. This study evaluated the in vitro antitrypanosomal activity of aqueous, hydroethanolic and ethanolic extracts from the leaf and roots of R. obtusifolius L.

Whole-genome sequencing of trypanosoma brucei reveals introgression between subspecies that is associated with virulence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Human African trypanosomiasis is caused by two subspecies of Trypanosoma brucei. Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense is found in East Africa and frequently causes acute disease, while Trypanosoma brucei gambiense is found in West Africa and is associated with

TNF‐α partially modulates the endothelial dysfunction during the acute phase of Trypanosoma cruzi infection

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, Volume 183, Issue 10, Page 2256-2272, May 2026.
Background and Purpose Whereas the effects of Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi) infection are well‐characterised in the heart, its impact on the vasculature has received little attention. In this study, we investigated the effects of acute and chronic T. cruzi infection on vascular responsiveness and the underlying mechanisms.

High Incidence of Severe Parasitemia in Falciparum Malaria [PDF]

open access: yesMedical Journal Armed Forces India, 2002
Dear Editor, In response to the communication by Lt Col D Rosha et al [1], I would like to put on record our experiences with falciparum malaria in an Air Force station situated in a semi-hilly, densely forested, tribal, highly malarious belt in Central India. Meterological and topographical features in this belt ensure heavy transmission of malaria

Studies on parasitemia courses and mortality in mice infected with genetically distant Trypanosoma cruzi clonets

open access: yesBiological Research, 2001
The biological characterization of bloodstream forms of eleven Trypanosoma cruzi cloned stocks, corresponding to two genetically similar clonets (19 and 20) and one distant clonet (39), according to multilocus enzyme electrophoresis analysis, showed ...
