Directional hearing by mechanical coupling in the parasitoid fly Ormia ochracea

Journal of Comparative Physiology A, 1996
Sound localization is a basic processing task of the auditory system. The directional detection of an incident sound impinging on the ears relies on two acoustic cues: interaural amplitude and interaural time differences. In small animals, with short interaural distances both amplitude and time cues can become very small, challenging the directional ...

Relative movement patterns of a tephritid fly and its parasitoid wasps

Oecologia, 1996
The extent of within-patch dispersal by a tephritid fly and its four major parasitoids was examined over three field seasons. Hosts and parasitoids were marked using acrylic paint and observed as they oviposited into the flowerheads of marsh thistle, Cirsium palustre. The average recapture rate pooled across all species was 22%.

Zombie fire ant workers: behavior controlled by decapitating fly parasitoids

Insectes Sociaux, 2007
Laboratory observations were conducted on four separate red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, colonies that contained workers parasitized by the decapitating fly, Pseudacteon tricuspis. Parasitized S. invicta workers remained inside the nest during parasitoid larval development and left the nest approximately 8 – 10 hours before decapitation by ...

Low temperature storage effects on two olive fruit fly parasitoids

BioControl, 2012
Effects of cold storage temperatures and storage duration were evaluated for Psyttalia humilis (Silvestri) from Namibia and Psyttalia ponerophaga (Silvestri) from Pakistan, braconid parasitoids of Bactrocera oleae (Rossi) imported to California, USA. Immature stages of P.

Fruit fly parasitoids in coffee in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa

Biocontrol Science and Technology, 2010
Abstract Bracon celer, Psyttalia perproxima, Psyttalia humilis (all Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and Tetrastichus giffardianus (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) were reared from fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) infesting Coffea canephora in Mpumalanga, South Africa. Psyttalia perproxima and T.

Antennal olfactory sensilla of the parasitoid fly, Pseudoperichaeta nigrolineata Walker (Diptera : Tachinidae)

International Journal of Insect Morphology and Embryology, 1996
Abstract The antennal sensilla of male and female Pseudoperichaeta nigrolineata Walker (Diptera: Tachinidae) were studied by scanning electron microscopy. Five types of sensilla were identified on the funicle. The trichoid sensilla are most conspicuous, with a characteristic distal curvature and wall pores.

Visual control of host pursuit in the parasitoid fly Exorista japonica

Journal of Experimental Biology, 2002
SUMMARY The tachinid fly Exorista japonica is a parasitoid of many kinds of lepidopterous larvae. After encountering a suitable host, the fly pursues the crawling larva on foot using visual cues to guide it. To investigate the visual control of host pursuit, we observed and videotaped pursuits of a host, the common armyworm Mythimna ...

Winter survival of nuisance fly parasitoids (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) in Canada and Denmark

Bulletin of Entomological Research, 2004
AbstractIndependent studies were performed in Canada and in Denmark to assess the survival of parasitic wasps (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) wintering in puparia of house fly,Musca domesticaLinnaeus (Diptera: Muscidae). Data in Canada were collected forMuscidifurax raptorGirault & Saunders,M. raptorellusKogan & Legner,M. zaraptorKogan & Legner,

Mass-Rearing of Larval Fruit Fly Parasitoids in Hawaii

1993
The Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), the melon fly, Dacus cucurbitae Coquillett, and the oriental fruit fly, Dacus dorsalis Hendel, are major pests of fruits and vegetables in Hawaii. D. cucurbitae was introduced into Hawaii from the Orient in 1895; C. capitata from Australia about 1910; and D.

Reproductive anatomy and embryogenesis of a viviparous, phonotactic, parasitoid fly

Annals of the Entomological Society of America
Abstract Ormia ochracea (Bigot 1889) is a phonotactic parasitoid fly that targets a variety of field cricket species as hosts for their developing young. Female flies locate their hosts by tracking a male cricket’s courtship song. Viviparous larvae are then deposited on or near the host which they then pierce and penetrate, completing ...
