Innervation and secretory function of transplanted human submandibular salivary glands

open access: yes, 2008
Free submandibular gland autotransplantation is used to treat absolute tear deficiency. Although disconnected from any peripheral innervation, most transplants show increasing secretion for years.

Sensitivity and Specificity of Atropine Injection for Testing for Irreversible Loss of Brain Function: Experiences From 394 Examinations

open access: yesActa Neurologica Scandinavica, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Objectives Testing for brain death/death by neurologic criteria includes proof of irreversible loss of all brain functions. Intravenously administered atropine can serve as a complementary clinical test. This study determines the cut‐off value, sensitivity, and specificity of the atropine test and examines implications for the safety of existing ...

Prevalence and Duration of Potential Drug–Drug Interactions Among US Nursing Home Residents, 2018–2020

open access: yesJournal of the American Geriatrics Society, Volume 73, Issue 12, Page 3766-3777, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Background Nursing home (NH) residents are at increased risk of drug–drug interactions (DDIs) due to multimorbidity and polypharmacy. While prior research suggests that many DDIs lead to adverse drug events in older adults, the extent of exposure to potentially clinically relevant DDIs among United States (US) NH residents is largely unknown ...

Effect of N‐Butylscopolammonium Bromide and Metamizol Sodium on Heart Rate, Blood Pressure, and Echocardiographic Measurements in Warmblood Horses With Aortic and Mitral Valve Regurgitation

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Volume 39, Issue 6, November/December 2025.
ABSTRACT Background Administration of N‐butylscopolammonium bromide (NBB) with metamizol sodium (NBBM) causes tachycardia and hypertension, and has been associated with accentuated cardiac murmurs. Objectives To evaluate the effect of a pharmacological challenge using NBBM on valvular regurgitation and cardiac murmurs in horses with aortic (AR) and ...

Autonomic effects of electroacupuncture in opioid‐induced constipation in male rats

open access: yesPhysiological Reports, Volume 13, Issue 19, October 2025.
Abstract The efficacy of electroacupuncture (EA) for opioid‐induced constipation (OIC) has been reported; however, the mechanism has not been sufficiently studied, and the details have not been clarified. The aims of this study were to demonstrate the delay in rat colonic transit (CT) caused by loperamide, a peripheral μ‐opioid receptor agonist, and to

Around the EQUATOR With Clin‐STAR: Systematic Reviews of Intervention Effectiveness; Challenges and Opportunities

open access: yesJournal of the American Geriatrics Society, Volume 73, Issue 8, Page 2356-2365, August 2025.
ABSTRACT Systematic reviews offer clarity about the effectiveness of interventions based on the best available evidence. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta‐Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 statement updated previous guidance to ensure transparency in the reporting of systematic reviews of intervention effectiveness. To adhere to the 27

Blockade of Ovulation in the Hen with Adrenolytic and Parasympatholytic Drugs.

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1953
Summary and ConclusionsBoth atropine and SKF-501 block the normal occurring ovulation and the progesterone-induced ovulation in the hen. It is suggested that a neural link must be present in the mechanism regulating ovulation in the hen. This link may be similar to that postulated for the rat and the rabbit.

The anticholinergic burden in patients with chronic kidney disease: Patterns, risk factors, and the link with cognitive impairment

open access: yesJournal of the American Geriatrics Society, Volume 73, Issue 2, Page 533-544, February 2025.
Abstract Background People with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have an elevated risk of cognitive impairment (CI). Medications with anticholinergic activity are recognized for their adverse reactions on central nervous system. The putative association between the anticholinergic burden and CI has not previously been evaluated in patients with CKD.
