Parathyroid cancer is a rare endocrine tumor and an uncommon cause of HPT. Advances have been made to identify a promising molecular diagnostic marker for the disease. The use of accurate preoperative imaging modalities would undoubtedly facilitate its management by making an accurate preoperative diagnosis by assessing its invasiveness, and by ...

Parathyroid hormone is an essential regulator of extracellular calcium and phosphate. PTH enhances calcium reabsorption while inhibiting phosphate reabsorption in the kidneys, increases the synthesis of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, which then increases gastrointestinal absorption of calcium, and increases bone resorption to increase calcium and phosphate ...

This article reviews current knowledge on the etiology, diagnosis and treatment of parathyroid carcinoma.Due to its rarity, research on the molecular etiology and treatment of parathyroid carcinoma has been slow. Mutations of the tumor suppressor gene, HRPT2, and resultant loss of expression of its gene product have been found in the majority of ...

Patients with parathyroid disease can have important musculoskeletal problems.Hypoparathyroidism can cause subcutaneous calcifications, tetany, muscle cramps, and paresthesias, but also myopathies and an ankylosing spondylitis-like back disease. Hypoparathyroidism can occur in SLE caused by antiparathyroid antibodies.Patients with hyperparathyroidism ...

Important recent contributions to the literature on parathyroid neoplasia have dealt with advances in the understanding of the molecular genetics, diagnosis, and treatment of these neoplasms. Specific gene loci for multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 and multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2a have been defined.

Parathyroid Autotransplantation
European Urology, 19817 patients with diffuse parathyroid hyperplasia underwent total parathyroidectomy and microsurgical autotransplantation for diffuse parathyroid hyperplasia. 5 of 7 patients showed good function of the grafted parathyroid tissue, as checked by the separate PTH assay from the grafted versus not grafted forearm.

Fifty-eight human fetal thyroid glands obtained at autopsy were systematically studied for the presence of intrathyroidal parathyroid tissue. The latter was found in 13 thyroid lobes from 12 fetuses. It was located in a subcapsular position in 9 of 58 cases and lying deep in thyroid tissue in 4 of 58.

Although parathyroid neoplasms are common and cause primary hyperparathyroidism, parathyroid carcinoma is a rare entity. At times it can be difficult to diagnose. Patients with parathyroid carcinoma usually present with profound symptoms of hyperparathyroidism and highly elevated serum calcium and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels.
