Archives of Surgery, 1992Although rare following initial cervical exploration, reoperative parathyroid surgery may cause permanent hypoparathyroidism in 15% to 30% of patients. Prolonged exposure to raised parathyroid hormone and serum calcium can lead to a multitude of systemic symptoms (Table 1). It is important to consider hyperparathyroidism in the differential diagnosis of patents with hypercalcaemia. Parathyroid surgery can cure patients with primary hyperparathyroidism and lead to prolonged life expectancy.
