Dopamine Transporter Imaging for Distinguishing Between Idiopathic Parkinson’s Disease and Secondary Parkinsonism [PDF]
Idiopathic Parkinson’s disease (IPD), first described by James Parkinson in 1817, is a sporadic neurodegenerative disorder. The main clinical features include masked face, resting tremor, bradykinesia, rigidity, festinating gait, and loss of postural reflexes. The clinical features are most insidious and usually asymmetric at onset.

Secondary task performance during challenging walking tasks and freezing episodes in Parkinson’s disease [PDF]
Parkinson's disease (PD) patients likely use attentional strategies to compensate for their gait deficits, which increases the cognitive challenge of walking. The interplay between cognitive functions and gait can be investigated by evaluating the subject's attendance to a secondary task during walking.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by progressive degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra, while secondary parkinsonism (SP) may be due to drugs, vascular, infectious, inflammatory, or even paraneoplastic etiologies. There is currently no biomarker that accurately distinguishes SP from PD.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.
