Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Pertussis surveillance in a children hospital in Bangkok, Thailand

open access: yesInternational Journal of Infectious Diseases, 2019
Objectives: To investigate the incidence, clinical characteristics and cost associated with pertussis in Thai children with persistent cough. Methods: A prospective study was conducted among children aged 0–18 years with persistent cough for ≥7 days with

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Inflammatory markers and their association with main cardiovascular risk factors in patients with atrial fibrillation and arterial hypertension

open access: yesРоссийский кардиологический журнал, 2007
According to modern views, immuno-inflammatory activation plays an important role in atrial fibrillation (AF) pathogenesis. In 97patients with arterial hypertension (AH), paroxysm and non-paroxysm levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor-

The human gut microbiome across the life course

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Despite significant individual variation and continuous change throughout life, the human gut microbiome follows some life stage‐specific trends. This article provides a brief overview of how gut microbiome composition shifts across different phases of life. Created in BioRender. Özkurt, E. (2026) https://BioRender.com/8q4nrnc.

Del neoliberalismo al pos-apocalipsis: la reificación del cuerpo en Plop (2002) de Rafael Pinedo

open access: yesAmerika, 2020
This article inquires, throughout the post-apocalyptical novel Plop (2002) from Rafael Pinedo, into the phenomenon of the “Economization” of the existence, the process through which the neoliberal state policies commodifies each and every single spheres ...

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

The role of cytokines in Plasmodium vivax malaria

open access: yesMemorias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 1992
The cytokine tumor necrosis factor and other as yet unidentified factor(s) which together mediate the killing of intraerythrocytic malaria parasites are transiently elevated in sera during paroxysms in human Plasmodium vivax infections in non-immunes ...

Modulation of Homer1 EVH1 domain internal dynamics by putative autism‐associated mutations

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The putative autism‐associated M65I and S97L variants of the EVH1 domain of the postsynaptic scaffold protein Homer1 do not exhibit substantial changes in their overall structure or partner binding. Both of them, but especially the M65I variant, show altered internal dynamics relative to the wild‐type domain on the μs‐ms timescale, indicated by the ...
