Abstract. The results of pars plana lensectomy (PPL) in 36 eyes are reported. The average follow‐up time was 9 months (2–24). The optical media became clear in all eyes. Post‐operative visual acuity (VA) was ≧ 0.6 in 31 eyes. Two eyes developed serious complications (retinal detachment in 1 eye and neovascular glaucoma in 1 eye).

Pars plana cysts are occasionally seen when the extreme periphery of the fundus is examined with the Schepens technique 1,2 of indirect ophthalmoscopy and scleral pressure. The cysts in this report were incidental findings in presumably normal eye bank eyes, examined before fixation by indirect ophthalmoscopy and scleral pressure and after fixation by

A PPV is a surgical procedure in which the vitreous gel is removed using ports placed through the pars plana. The port system allows the procedure to be performed in a closed system, opposed to the previous open sky techniques. The advantages of the PPV are decreased operative times, increased patient comfort, decreased conjunctival scarring, decreased
