Structures of phosphonitrides in light of the extended Zintl–Klemm concept

open access: yesActa Crystallographica Section B, Volume 81, Issue 4, Page 378-394, August 2025.
The extended Zintl–Klemm concept (EZKC), applied satisfactorily to rationalize the structures of aluminates and silicates, also accounts for the structures of ternary phosphonitrides. The extended Zintl–Klemm concept (EZKC) is applied to explain the crystalline structures of phosphonitrides (also known as nitridophosphates in the chemical literature ...

Periodic Revival or Continuation of the Ancient Military Tradition? Another Look at the Question of the Katáfraktoi in the Byzantine Army [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
This article discusses the question of origin and identity of katáfraktoi – heavy-armoured cavalry in Byzantium. In the specialist literature on the subject, there is a widespread opinion that the heavily-armoured elitist cavalry, defined as catafracti

Topological coordination numbers and coordination reciprocity from electron‐density distributions

open access: yesActa Crystallographica Section A, Volume 81, Issue 3, Page 221-244, May 2025.
An approach is presented to calculate topological coordination numbers (tCNs) obeying the principle of coordination reciprocity from solid angles subtended by the interatomic surfaces of electron density (QTAIM) atomic domains. The tCN approach characterizes a compound's coordination situation as a set of sub‐coordination scenarios with associated ...

The Yenisei Makes the Weather: The Microclimate of the Krasnoyarsk Dam and Its Research, 1960s–1990s

open access: yesThe Russian Review, Volume 84, Issue 2, Page 249-266, April 2025.
Abstract When Soviet authorities began building the Krasnoyarsk Dam in 1956, the Yenisei River had an ice‐free period of only 112 days a year. The thick and long‐lasting ice impeded dam building and navigation. However, as the dam rose, it produced an environmental anomaly; for more than 200 kilometers downstream, the Yenisei became ice‐free year‐round.

First Principles Study of Electronic, Vibrational, Elastic, and Thermodynamic Properties of Sc‐X (X = P, S, Se) Compounds

open access: yesEngineering Reports, Volume 7, Issue 1, January 2025.
A comprehensive DFT study of Sc‐X (X = P, S, Se) compounds revealed structural and dynamic stability. The mechanical and thermodynamic properties of the compounds were calculated in the range 0–800 K. The heat capacity increases exponentially at low temperatures and approaches the Dulong–Petit limit at higher temperatures.

Anthropogenic particle concentrations and fluxes in an urban river are temporally variable and impacted by storm events

open access: yesWater Environment Research, Volume 96, Issue 4, April 2024.
This study used automated samplers to collect anthropogenic particles (AP) from the Milwaukee River during four storm events. AP concentrations and fluxes varied with storm phase, and storms increased AP transport downstream compared with baseflow. AP concentrations did not correlate with other water quality metrics during storms.
