Does direct democracy increase civic virtues? A systematic literature review

open access: yesFrontiers in Political Science
Due to widespread citizen disenchantment with representative democracy, the introduction of direct-democratic institutions is often promoted as a promising remedy to overcome the current democratic crisis. Theorists of participatory democracy have argued

Intrinsically Disordered Protein‐Inspired Nanovector‐Based Coacervates for the Direct Cytosolic Transport of Biomacromolecules

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Intrinsically disordered protein‐inspired nanovectors (IDP‐NVs) form stable nanocoacervates (NCs) with diverse biomacromolecules. In situ conformational changes confer stability and adaptability to NCs under dynamically changing physiological conditions.

Participatory budgeting like new element in regional and public economy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006

Spin‐Split Edge States in Metal‐Supported Graphene Nanoislands Obtained by CVD

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Combining STM measurements and ab‐initio calculations, we show that zig‐zag edges in graphene nanoislands grown on Ni(111) by CVD retrieve their spin‐polarized edge states after intercalation of a few monolayers of Au. ABSTRACT Spin‐split states localized on zigzag edges have been predicted for different free‐standing graphene nanostructures.

Comprehensive Understanding of Accelerated Kinetics Driven by Anion–Diluent Dynamics Enabling Wide Temp Operation in Dual‐Ion Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The transient interactions between TFSI− anions and a diluent within an anion‐dictated electrolyte are revealed, which can reduce interfacial reorganization energy, thereby accelerating ion kinetics and markedly facilitating sustainable anion storage in high‐voltage graphite cathodes for dual‐ion batteries at fast charge and wide temperature range ...

Public Spending, By The People: Participatory Budgeting in the United States and Canada in 2014-15 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
From 2014 to 2015, more than 70,000 residents across the United States and Canada directly decided how their cities and districts should spend nearly $50 million in public funds through a process known as participatory budgeting (PB).

Correlated Dual‐Gradient Electrodes Enabling Spatially Synchronized Sulfur Redox in High‐Mass‐Loading Li–S Batteries Under High Current Densities

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Coupling a dual‐gradient carbonized framework with Fe2O3/Fe‐N‐C catalytic sites enables spatially synchronized sulfur redox across the entire electrode thickness in high‐mass‐loading Li–S batteries. This synergistic structural–catalytic design effectively mitigates concentration, ohmic, and electrochemical polarization, thereby achieving high‐capacity ...
