The preservation of quartz grain surface textures following vehicle fire and their use in forensic enquiry [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
During a terrorist trial, dispute arose as to whether the temperature produced in a car fire was sufficient to destroy quartz grain surface textures.

A light‐triggered Time‐Resolved X‐ray Solution Scattering (TR‐XSS) workflow with application to protein conformational dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Time‐resolved X‐ray solution scattering captures how proteins change shape in real time under near‐native conditions. This article presents a practical workflow for light‐triggered TR‐XSS experiments, from data collection to structural refinement. Using a calcium‐transporting membrane protein as an example, the approach can be broadly applied to study ...

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

A practical method for preparing Ca(OH)2 nanodispersions for the consolidation of archaeological calcareous stones [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Exposure to atmospheric conditions results in considerable deterioration of calcareous building stones, lime mortars and plasters in archaeological monuments, requiring several conservation treatments.

Revisiting Stability Criteria in Ball‐Milled High‐Entropy Alloys: Do Hume–Rothery and Thermodynamic Rules Equally Apply?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 6, March 2025.
The stability criteria affecting the formation of high‐entropy alloys, particularly focusing in supersaturated solid solutions produced by mechanical alloying, are analyzed. Criteria based on Hume–Rothery rules are distinguished from those derived from thermodynamic relations. The formers are generally applicable to mechanically alloyed samples.

Magnetospheric Control of Ionospheric TEC Perturbations via Whistler‐Mode and ULF Waves

open access: yesAGU Advances
The weakly ionized plasma in the Earth's ionosphere is controlled by a complex interplay between solar and magnetospheric inputs from above, atmospheric processes from below, and plasma electrodynamics from within.

On the Lightweight Potential of Laser Additive Manufactured NiTi Triply Periodic Minimal Sheet Lattices

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study explores the lightweight potential of laser additive‐manufactured NiTi triply periodic minimal surface sheet lattices. It systematically investigates the effects of relative density and unit cell size on surface quality, deformation recovery, compression behavior, and energy absorption.

Statistical study about the influence of particle precipitation on mesosphere summer echoes in polar latitudes during July 2013

open access: yesEarth, Planets and Space, 2018
Based on experimental observations with EISCAT VHF radar during the summer period, July 8–12, 2013, the observations of polar mesosphere summer echoes (PMSE) in the absence of particle precipitation indicate that particle precipitation is not a necessary

Simple precipitation method to reduce the particle size of glutinous rice flour: physicochemical evaluation

open access: yesMaterials Research Express, 2022
Submicron- and nano-sized starch can be employed as organic filler particles in composites. Starch with this size range can be used as an alternative filler for dental impression materials that are used to create an accurate replica or mold of the hard ...
