Granular dampers: does particle shape matter?

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2016
By means of particle-based numerical simulations using the discrete element method, we address the question of how the performance of granular dampers is affected by the shape of the granular particles.

Numerical Prediction of the Bulk Density of Granular Particles of Different Geometries

open access: yesKONA Powder and Particle Journal, 2014
The Discrete Element Method (DEM) is increasingly used to simulate the motion of granular material in engineering devices. The most widely used shape to model granular particles is the sphere due to its simplicity ...

Combined Influence of Particle Shape and Fabric on the Shear Behaviour of Granular Materials

open access: yesAdvances in Materials Science and Engineering, 2022
The anisotropy feature is an important characteristic of granular materials in natural life and is caused by two facts: the anisotropy feature of particle shape, such as an elongated or flattened shape, and the anisotropy feature of the packing fabric ...

Evaluating Sand Particle Surface Smoothness Using a New Computer-Based Approach to Improve the Characterization of Macroscale Parameters

open access: yesGeotechnics, 2023
The analysis of sands, and the foundation systems with which they interact, are largely dependent on macroscale behavioral parameters that represent the aggregated response of several microscale characteristics. This research paper examines the influence

Bedload transport in rivers, size matters but so does shape

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
Bedload transport modelling in rivers takes into account the size and density of pebbles to estimate particle mobility, but does not formally consider particle shape.

Shaping Particles for Ultramicrotomy [PDF]

open access: yesMRS Proceedings, 1991
AbstractA technique for preshaping large particles of reacted glass for ultramicrotomy is described. This technique preserves delicate surface layers and results in more sections per block extending deeper into the sample than other techniques.

Single particle crushing tests of coarse grained soil considering size and shape effects

open access: yesYantu gongcheng xuebao
Particle size and shape significantly influence the crushing behaviors of coarse grained soil. In this study, the particle scanning, particle shape analysis, and single particle compression tests on the gravel soils of high filling project of Baihetan ...

A Study on Shape-Dependent Settling of Single Particles with Equal Volume Using Surface Resolved Simulations

open access: yesComputation, 2021
A detailed knowledge of the influence of a particle’s shape on its settling behavior is useful for the prediction and design of separation processes. Models in the available literature usually fit a given function to experimental data.

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.
