Determination of organic oxygen in ambient particulate matter

Science of The Total Environment, 1984
A sample of ambient particulate matter is pyrolyzed in N2 at 1135°C, and the evolved oxygen is detected by nondispersive infrared spectrometry after conversion to CO. Oxygen in organic compounds, carbonates, silicates, sulfates, nitrates, water, and adsorbed oxygen-containing gases is quantitated; but silica and alumina are not detected. Organic oxygen

Budgeting the particulate organic matter from the suspended particulate matter in shelf seas

Dissolved CO2 and buried organic matter budgets have been studied in shelf seas to identify carbon fractions that are exported to the ocean interior or preserved in the sediment. However, the fate of suspended particulate organic matter remains less understood, particularly because its lability is difficult to identify.

Characterization of polar organics in airborne particulate matter

Atmospheric Environment (1967), 1986
Abstract The methanol-extractable highly polar organics in atmospheric aerosol were characterized using GC-MS. Dicarboxylic acids having 2–16 carbon numbers were detected with a total concentration of 172 ng m −3 . Azelaic acid ( C 9 ) was the most abundant diacid and it possibly originated from the ozonolysis of unsaturated carboxylic acids such as

Coarse Particulate Organic Matter Budgets

2005
An organic matter budget is a systematic account of organic matter inputs and outputs in an ecosystem or parts thereof. To construct a coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM) budget for a stream, CPOM inputs, outputs and storage can be measured according to methods described in other chapters of this book.

Photodissolution of particulate organic matter from sediments

Limnology and Oceanography, 2006
Irradiation of particulate organic matter (POM) at light intensities found at the earth's surface should induce reduction in molecular weight, as found for dissolved organic matter, and hence result in transfer to the dissolved phase. We studied Mississippi River suspended sediments to test if photodissolution can induce losses of POM similar to those ...

Retention of particulate organic matter in a tropical headstream

Hydrobiologia, 2002
Retention of particulate organic matter was investigated over a range of water discharges in pool and riffle zones of a tropical stream (Itauna Stream, Sao Paulo, Brazil). A closed-system leaf release and capture method was used to quantify leaf retention in a 50-m reach of the stream.

Particulate Organic Matter in Sea Water

1971
Publisher Summary The non-living organic matter in sea water is derived from a variety of plant sources, including phytoplankton, attached aquatic vegetation in shallow waters, macroscopic pelagic algae, and waterborne and windborne materials of terrestrial origin. The relative importance of these various sources cannot be stated precisely, but there

Organic content of particulate matter in the atmosphere of Ouargla City, Algeria.

Annali di chimica, 2001
The particle-bound organic compounds comprising n-alkanes, n-alkanoic monocarboxylic acids, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and nitrated polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAH) were investigated in ambient air of the Ouargla city area (Algeria) during a short campaign performed in November 1999.
